Chapter 9 - The Press Conference Smackdown

The audio file began to play over the courtroom speakers with crystal-clear fidelity.

*“Brandon, you idiot, make sure you don't put her name on the hospital discharge papers,”* Victoria’s voice rang out, cold and merciless. *“Let the baby stay in the ward as an abandoned ward of the state. If Clara dies of postpartum complications or gets evicted, we won't have to pay a dime in spousal support. Once we cash out her grandmother’s trust, we leave for the Bahamas and leave that parasite to rot.”*

The collective gasp in the courtroom was deafening. The judge’s face darkened with absolute fury.

Brandon buried his face in his cuffed hands, letting out a pathetic, muffled sob of utter despair. Victoria jumped to her feet, knocking her chair backward. “That’s private! That’s an illegal wiretap! You can't use that!”

“Sit down, Miss Hale!” Judge Ramirez slammed his gavel down three times, the wood echoing like gunshot cracks. “The audio was legally retrieved under a federal warrant investigating wire fraud. Counter-claims dismissed with prejudice. Bail is revoked immediately. Miss Hale will be remanded into custody without bond pending trial alongside Mr. Hayes.”

Bailiffs moved in instantly, cuffing Victoria’s wrists behind her back as she kicked and screamed obscenities. The press photographers went into a frenzy, flashbulbs illuminating her grotesque breakdown.

Two hours later, outside the courthouse steps, I stood behind a bank of microphones, Daniel standing half a step behind me.

“Mrs. Vance!” a reporter shouted. “What do you have to say about the claims that you orchestrated Brandon’s downfall?”

I adjusted the microphone, looking straight into the camera lenses that were broadcasting live across the country.

“A man does not fall because someone pushed him,” I spoke clearly, my voice carrying across the plaza. “He falls because he built his entire life on lies, cruelty, and the exploitation of those who trusted him. Today, justice was served. But my focus is no longer on the past.”

I paused, signaling to Daniel, who displayed a digital graphic on a monitor beside the podium.

“Today, I am announcing the launch of the Arthur Vance Foundation for Single Mothers,” I announced. “An initial endowment of fifteen million dollars has been allocated to provide free legal representation, emergency housing, and infant care for women who have been abandoned or financially abused by their partners. No woman will ever have to face what I faced alone.”

The crowd of reporters erupted into applause. In a matter of minutes, Victoria’s vicious smear campaign had been crushed, and my new life as a philanthropist and leader was cemented.
