Chapter 24 - The Frozen Veil

The air on the sunlit veranda turned instantly to ice.

My fingers went numb against the aged parchment. The name printed on the Geneva birth certificate burned into my retinas: *Julian Vance II*—a twin born minutes after the infant recorded as Daniel Vance. The document explicitly stated that the infant named Daniel had died of respiratory failure three days after birth, while the surviving twin, Julian Vance II, had been unofficially registered under his deceased brother’s identity to secure the primary lineage trust.

Daniel was not Daniel.

He was the twin brother of Julian—the man I had just spent months destroying, the man who had funded Brandon’s greed and turned my life into a living hell.

"Clara?"

Daniel’s deep, resonant voice cut through the roaring in my ears. He was only five steps away, wiping the salt spray from his forearms with a linen towel. His gaze dropped to the stiff paper trembling in my hands, then shifted to my pale, bloodless face.

"Darling, what's wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost," he said, stepping toward me with that effortless grace that had once brought me so much comfort.

My instincts kicked in—the cold, battle-tested survival reflexes I had developed ever since Brandon dumped me in that rainy ditch with newborn Leo. Without a sound, I slid the letter and the yellowed birth certificate beneath the soft cashmere blanket draped over Leo’s stroller. My thumb smoothed the crease in the fabric as I forced my breathing to steady.

"Just... old business from the city," I said, my voice sounding distant even to my own ears. "Sarah brought over the final audit of Charles’s foundation. It brought back memories of my grandfather."

Daniel paused. His sapphire eyes, usually so warm and transparent, narrowed slightly. It was a fleeting flicker of calculation—so brief that if I hadn't spent years studying the deceptive micro-expressions of Brandon and Julian, I never would have caught it.

"Charles was an exceptional man," Daniel said softly, closing the remaining distance. He reached down and gently placed a warm hand on my shoulder. Usually, his touch felt like an anchor in a raging sea. Today, it sent a tremor of pure adrenaline down my spine. "He protected you from afar for a long time. But you don't have to carry his ghosts anymore, Clara. You have me. You and Leo are safe."

He leaned down and kissed my forehead. His lips were warm, smelling of cedarwood and sea salt. It was the touch of the man who had pulled me out of despair, who had held Leo through feverish nights, who had dismantled Julian's empire to avenge me.

*Or was it?*

*“Brandon was placed in your path from the very beginning by someone inside Daniel's immediate circle.”*

My grandfather’s words rang inside my skull like a funeral toll. If Daniel was Julian’s twin, if the real Daniel died twenty-five years ago... then who had I welcomed into my bed? Who was holding my baby?

"You're shaking," Daniel murmured, his fingers tightening gently on my shoulder. "Come inside. The ocean wind is picking up."

"I will," I replied, forcing my lips into a fragile smile that cost me every ounce of strength I possessed. "I just want a few more minutes with Leo in the fresh air. Go take a shower. I’ll meet you in the dining room."

Daniel stared at me for three long, suffocating seconds. The breeze whipped his dark hair across his brow. "Don't stay out too long. The caterers are arriving at six to finalize the wedding menu."

"I won't," I promised.

He turned and walked toward the master wing. The moment his heavy footsteps faded down the corridor, I collapsed onto the wicker lounger, gasping for breath. I pulled the document back out from beneath Leo's blanket.

My hands were shaking violently as I dialed Sarah’s encrypted direct line.

"Sarah," I whispered, the words scraping against my raw throat. "Turn the car around. Come back to the back gate. And don't tell a living soul you're here."
