Chapter 20 - The Ashes of the Past

Twenty-four hours later, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, clear winter sky over the city.
In a secure private room on the VIP floor of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, Leo slept peacefully in an acrylic bassinet beside my bed, utterly untouched by the horrors of the night before.
The television on the wall was playing on mute, displaying breaking news banners across national networks:
*“BILLIONAIRE CONSPIRACY UNRAVELED: JULIAN VANCE ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR TREASON STING.”*
*“BRANDON STERLING IN MEDICALLY INDUCED COMA AS ASSETS FROZEN WORLDWIDE.”*
*“CLARA VANCE CONFIRMED AS SOLE LEGAL HEIR TO CHARLES VANCE TRUST VALUED AT $4.2 BILLION.”*
The door opened softly, and Daniel walked in, carrying a fresh cup of coffee and a bouquet of white lilies. He was dressed in a clean black turtleneck and tailored trousers, though a discreet bandage still covered his left temple.
When his eyes met mine, the sharp, dangerous soldier melted away, replaced by an expression so tender it made my throat ache.
"The doctors said Leo is completely healthy," Daniel said softly, setting the flowers on the side table. "Not even a cough from the sea air."
"He has his mother's stubbornness," I murmured, offering a small, tired smile.
Daniel walked over to the edge of the bed and sat down. He looked at me for a long moment, the silence between us filled with an intensity that made my heart flutter in a way it never had with Brandon.
"Julian is being held in a federal isolation facility without bail," Daniel said quietly. "Brandon survived his surgery, but his spine was severed during the crash. He will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair inside a state penitentiary hospital. He will never touch a penny. He will never see you or Leo again."
Tears welled up in my eyes—not of grief, but of profound, overwhelming release. The nightmare was over. The man who abandoned me while I was bleeding on a hospital bed, the man who laughed while holding his mistress's hand, had lost everything.

"Thank you, Daniel," I whispered. "You saved us."
Daniel reached out, his warm, strong fingers gently closing around mine. "You saved yourself, Clara. You fought like a lioness. I was just the man lucky enough to stand beside you."
