Chapter 23 - The Shadow on the Shoreline

One month later, the coastal estate in Maine was nearing completion.

The afternoon sun cast long, golden reflections across the crashing Atlantic waves. Daniel was down at the boat dock with the landscape contractors, directing the installation of the security perimeter and the private pier.

I sat on the wide cedar veranda overlooking the private cove, holding six-month-old Leo on my lap as he happily babbled, watching the seagulls glide across the blue sky. Life felt miraculous, untainted, and full of radiant hope.

My executive assistant, Sarah, walked out onto the veranda, holding a silver tray with an unopened courier envelope.

"Excuse me, Madame Chairman," Sarah said, looking slightly puzzled. "This just arrived via private courier from Zurich, Switzerland. It was flagged as personal and confidential, marked with your grandfather’s private seal."

My eyebrows drew together. "My grandfather’s seal? But all of Charles’s trust vaults were settled months ago."

"The courier said it was programmed on a automated sixty-day dead man's switch, released only after Julian Vance’s federal conviction was officially logged in international registries," Sarah explained, handing me the heavy wax-sealed envelope before discreetly excusing herself.

My heart gave a strange, unexpected thud.

I carefully sliced open the heavy parchment envelope. Inside was a handwritten letter in my grandfather’s unmistakable, sharp cursive script, dated three days before his mysterious sudden death five years ago.

Tucked behind the letter was a yellowed hospital document and an old black-and-white photograph.

My eyes scanned the first lines of the letter:

*“My dearest Clara,*

*If you are reading this, Julian has fallen, and you have reclaimed the Vance name. But there is one final truth you must know before you marry into the Vance bloodline...*

*Julian was not acting alone. And Daniel's father did not die of natural causes in the fire twenty-five years ago.*

*Brandon was not a stranger who stumbled into your life by chance. Brandon was placed in your path from the very beginning by someone inside Daniel's immediate circle.*

*Look at the birth certificate enclosed. Daniel Vance is not who you think he is...”*

My breath seized in my throat.

My trembling fingers pulled out the second document—a birth certificate from an offshore clinic in Geneva.

At that exact moment, heavy footsteps sounded on the wooden stairs of the veranda.

Daniel walked onto the terrace, wiping sweat from his brow, his broad smile radiant as he looked at me and Leo.

"The dock is finished, Clara," Daniel called out warmly, stepping toward us with outstretched arms. "Everything is ready for our wedding next week."

I looked down at the document in my trembling hands, then slowly looked up into the piercing sapphire eyes of the man I had just agreed to marry.
