Chapter 29 - The Wolf and the Lioness

The sheer audacity of Marcus's words hung in the air like poison.
He didn't just want my money. He wanted my son. He wanted to raise Leo in the same twisted forge of manipulation and greed that had ruined Julian and Daniel.
A primal, violent fury surged through my veins, wiping away every trace of fear. I was not the terrified girl crying in the rain outside Brandon’s luxury apartment anymore. I was Clara Vance.
"You really think you're leaving this house alive, Marcus?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.
Marcus laughed—a dry, rasping sound. "My dear, I have eight armed men approaching the lower perimeter. Your head of security, Sarah, was detained at the north gate ten minutes ago. You have no cards left to play."
"You're wrong," Daniel said from the floor.
He didn't rise. Instead, he reached inside his cashmere sweater and pulled out a sleek, matte-black satellite detonator switch.
Marcus’s laughter died in his throat. His face drained of color. "What... what is that?"
"You've been tracking my movements through the offshore trust accounts for five years, Marcus," Daniel said, rising to his full height. His posture was no longer that of a grieving orphan; it was the chilling stance of an apex predator. "You thought I spent millions building that private yacht slip and the deep-water dock out back for Clara’s wedding present?"
Daniel stepped toward Marcus, his gaze burning with icy venom.
"The lower access road you brought your mercenaries through is mined with hydraulic sea-gate charges," Daniel said softly. "The moment your men crossed the threshold of the cliff bridge three minutes ago, my team sealed the perimeter behind them."
Marcus scrambled out of his chair, knocking his wine glass to the floor. "You're bluffing! You wouldn't risk your own estate with Clara and the child inside!"
"He doesn't have to bluff," a sharp, familiar voice called out from the dining room entrance.
We all turned. Standing in the doorway, soaked in rainwater, was Sarah. Beside her stood Inspector Girard, flanked by six heavily armed officers from the French National Gendarmerie, their tactical rifles raised and locked onto Marcus Sterling.
"Monsieur Sterling," Inspector Girard announced in his heavy French accent, his weapon trained squarely on Marcus’s chest. "Place your hands on the table. You are under arrest for international racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and the Zurich arson of 1999."
Marcus backed up until his spine hit the glass wall overlooking the stormy sea. "This is absurd! I have diplomatic immunity through the Monegasque consulate!"
"Your immunity was revoked thirty minutes ago," Sarah said, stepping forward with her tablet glowing in the dim light. "The moment Clara's audio brooch transmitted your confession directly to the federal magistrate's server."
I tapped the diamond brooch pinned to my silk blouse.
"Every single word, Marcus," I said, my voice echoing with absolute authority. "Every plan to murder us. Every confession about the fire. Every scheme involving Brandon. It’s already on the desks of the French High Court and the international press."
Marcus’s eyes darted frantically between the armed officers, Daniel’s towering frame, and my cold, unyielding glare.

He was trapped. Completely, utterly trapped.
