Chapter 7 - A New Empire Rises

Two weeks passed like a whirlwind of reinvention. With Daniel’s tireless legal maneuvering, the divorce was granted under emergency expedited statutes on grounds of felony fraud and domestic abandonment. Brandon was stripped of all parental rights, his name erased from Leo’s birth certificate as legal guardian, and a permanent restraining order was filed.
I refused to stay in the suburban house filled with ghosts of betrayal. Instead, Daniel helped me take possession of the crown jewel of my grandfather’s real estate portfolio: Vance Manor, a breathtaking, gated historic estate situated on twelve acres of rolling green hills just outside the city.
Surrounded by century-old oak trees, state-of-the-art security, and a dedicated staff who remembered my grandfather fondly, I finally felt safe. For the first time in months, Leo slept through the night without waking up to shouting or slammed doors.
One evening, Daniel arrived at the manor carrying two heavy briefcases filled with corporate transfer documents. As the twilight painted the sprawling estate in shades of gold and lavender, we sat on the stone terrace overlooking the private rose garden.
“All international wire transfers have cleared, Clara,” Daniel said, handing me a glass of iced sparkling cider while he sipped black coffee. “The Swiss trustees have formally recognized you as the sole surviving beneficiary of the Vance Industrial Trust. You now control a thirty-five percent voting stake in Apex Logistics, the parent company that supplies sixty percent of the automotive parts across the Midwest.”
I leaned back in the wicker chair, watching the breeze ruffle the curtains in Leo’s nursery upstairs. “It still feels like a dream, Daniel. A month ago, I was counting quarters to buy infant formula while Brandon was buying diamond bracelets for Victoria.”
Daniel looked at me, his gaze softening in a way that had nothing to do with attorney-client protocol. “You survived a storm that would have broken most people, Clara. You didn't just survive it; you conquered it. Your grandfather would be immensely proud.”
A warmth blossomed in my chest that caught me off guard. Over the past month, Daniel hadn't just been my lawyer; he had been my fortress. He showed up at midnight when the alarm went off, brought gourmet meals when he knew I had forgotten to eat, and held Leo with a gentle reverence that Brandon had never once shown his own child.
“I couldn't have done any of it without you, Daniel,” I whispered softly.
Our eyes locked, and for a fleeting second, the heavy air between us shifted. Daniel cleared his throat slightly, adjusting his tie, though his cheeks held a faint trace of crimson.
“We still have work to do,” he said, his voice dropping an octave. “Brandon’s preliminary hearing is tomorrow morning. And Victoria’s defense team just submitted an emergency motion for bail reduction.”

My eyes narrowed, the softness vanishing, replaced by cold resolve. “Let them try. Tomorrow, we finish this.”
