Chapter 5 - Desperation Behind Bars

The holding cell at the central precinct smelled of industrial bleach and unwashed misery. Brandon sat on the steel bench, his hands cuffed to the iron ring in the wall, his tailored Italian suit now wrinkled and stained with sweat. Across the glass partition, Victoria Hale was shrieking like a wounded animal.
“You said she had nothing!” Victoria screamed, slamming her manicured hands against the plexiglass, her makeup streaked with frantic tears. “You said she was an orphan with no family backing! They arrested me at the gate at JFK, Brandon! I was boarding the flight to Dubai, and federal agents tackled me in front of hundreds of people!”
“Shut up, Victoria!” Brandon barked, his face pale and haggard. “The lawyer is coming. My mother is liquidating her retirement funds to post our bail. It’s just a procedural hold. Clara doesn't have the stomach for a protracted court battle. She loves me. She’s weak. Once she cools down and realizes she has a newborn to feed, she’ll drop the charges if I agree to give her the minivan and child support.”
The heavy steel door at the end of the corridor buzzed open. Detective Miller walked in, holding a manila folder, followed not by Brandon’s high-priced corporate lawyer, but by a court-appointed public defender.
“Where is Gregory?” Brandon demanded, rattling his cuffs. “Gregory Vance is my firm’s chief counsel. Why is he not here?”
The public defender, a tired-looking man with thinning hair, pulled out a chair and sat down without shaking Brandon’s hand. “Mr. Vance declined representation twenty minutes ago. In fact, your firm’s board of directors held an emergency session at nine a.m. You have been terminated for cause, Mr. Hayes. Embezzlement, corporate espionage, and moral turpitude.”
Brandon’s breath hitched. His eyes bulged as the reality began to tear through his arrogant delusion. “That’s impossible! I am the vice president! I built that marketing division!”
“You used company servers to route stolen funds into an offshore blind trust,” Detective Miller said flatly. “And here’s the punchline, Mr. Hayes. That Swiss account didn't belong to some untraceable shadow entity Victoria’s shady contacts set up. It belonged to the Vance Estate. Clara Hayes’s maternal grandfather.”
Victoria froze, her jaw dropping. “What?”
“Mrs. Hayes didn't just inherit fifty-two million dollars this morning,” Detective Miller continued, savoring every word. “She also inherited the controlling debt note on your former employer's parent company. Which means, Brandon… your ex-wife doesn't just hold the keys to your prison cell. She essentially owns the company that just fired you.”

Brandon collapsed back against the cold concrete wall, the color draining completely from his face. For the first time in his life, he realized the woman he had discarded like trash was now a titan holding his entire world in the palm of her hand.
