Chapter 14 - The Serpent at the Gates

The voice slithered through the pitch-black corridor of Vance Manor, dripping with aristocratic venom.
Daniel did not hesitate. With fluid, lethal precision, he raised his firearm, shifting his broad frame to shield both me and baby Leo completely from the hallway. His voice was cold enough to freeze iron. "Step into the light of the hearth, Julian. Keep your hands where I can see them, or you won't leave this floor alive."
A slow, mocking clap echoed against the vaulted ceiling. From the shadows emerged a tall, silver-haired man draped in a tailored charcoal coat, leaning lightly on a silver-topped cane. His eyes gleamed with malicious amusement in the amber glow of the dying fireplace.
Julian Vance. Daniel’s estranged uncle—the disgraced former chairman of the Vance Overseas Trust, a man exiled from the family boardroom seven years ago after laundering billions through dummy corporations.
"Put the toy away, nephew," Julian chuckled softly, stopping just at the threshold of the drawing room. "Do you truly believe I breached your perimeter alone? Look outside the bay windows. The estate is surrounded by twelve tactical operatives. Every communications relay, backup generator, and satellite link within a five-mile radius has been scrubbed."
My heart hammered violently against my ribs. I clutched Leo tightly against my chest, feeling his tiny warmth. The betrayal tasted like bile. "You were behind Brandon," I said, my voice shaking only slightly before hardening into steel. "Brandon’s sudden wealth, his shell companies in Panama, the ambush on the highway tonight... it wasn't just corporate greed. It was you."
Julian offered a theatrical bow. "Brilliant as always, Clara. Brandon was an arrogant, easily manipulated fool. A peacock who believed he was an eagle. He thought he was playing the market, but he was merely holding the keys to your grandfather’s hidden vaults for me. Your grandfather, Charles Vance, hid seventy percent of the family’s true liquid reserves in encrypted Swiss-Panamanian ledgers, accessible only through a blood-line trust deed."
Julian stepped an inch forward, his silver cane clicking against the polished marble. "Brandon stole the certificates under my direction. But before I could liquidate them, you threw him into federal custody and seized his assets. When Brandon panicked during his transfer and threatened to trade my name for immunity, he became a liability. The truck that hit his transport was simply tying up a loose end."
"He was the father of this child," I snarled, stepping up beside Daniel, refusing to cower. "You tried to slaughter a state transport convoy in cold blood!"
"Collateral damage, my dear," Julian murmured. "And now, you will sign over the executor rights to the Vance-Sterling maritime holdings. If you sign, Daniel lives, you live, and your little bastard will grow up with a comfortable trust fund in Europe. If you refuse..."

A red laser sight materialized on the wall directly behind my head, dancing toward Leo’s blanket.
Daniel moved faster than thought.
