Chapter 21 - The Rise of an Empire

Three months passed.
The spring sun shone brightly over the gleaming glass towers of downtown Manhattan.
The name on the sixty-story skyscraper on Madison Avenue was no longer Sterling Holdings. It was now *The Charles & Leo Vance Foundation & Global Asset Trust*.
Inside the grand penthouse boardroom, twenty-four high-ranking executives and international investors sat in rapt silence. At the head of the conference table sat me, wearing an impeccably tailored navy suit, my dark hair styled in sharp, elegant waves.
Beside me, in a sleek leather carrier, five-month-old Leo was cooing softly, clutching a soft rattle, adored by every assistant in the executive suite.
"The restructuring is complete, Madame Chairman," the chief financial officer announced, projecting the final quarterly statements onto the panoramic screens. "All diverted assets from the Panamanian accounts have been recovered and reallocated. Our sustainable technology fund has yielded a thirty-two percent dividend in the first quarter alone. The company is debt-free."
A round of enthusiastic applause erupted across the boardroom.
I smiled, feeling an immense, grounding peace settle over my shoulders. "Thank you, gentlemen. Let us ensure twenty percent of all quarterly profits remain locked into the domestic abuse and newborn healthcare trusts we established last month. Meeting adjourned."
As the executives filed out with respectful nods, Daniel walked into the boardroom, carrying an architectural blueprint tucked under his arm.
"You run this room like an empress," Daniel said with a crooked, breathless smile as he closed the double mahogany doors.
"I learned from the best," I teased, standing up and lifting Leo into my arms. Leo gurgled happily, reaching his tiny hands out toward Daniel, who immediately took the boy with practiced, effortless tenderness.
Seeing Daniel hold my son with such pure, fatherly devotion made my chest tighten with emotion. In three months, Daniel had never left our side. He was there for every late-night feeding, every board meeting, every step of rebuilding our lives.
"What is that blueprint?" I asked, walking closer to him.

Daniel spread the architectural drawing onto the polished mahogany table. It was the blueprint for a breathtaking estate overlooking the coast of Maine, surrounded by blooming cherry blossoms and private gardens.
"Vance Manor held too many ghosts," Daniel murmured, stepping close to me, his deep blue eyes holding mine with an intensity that stole the air from my lungs. "I had this designed for us. A fresh start. Away from the vultures. A place where Leo can run on the grass and grow up surrounded by peace."
