Chapter 31 - Blood and Vows

Daniel stood six feet away from me.
Water dripped from his chin, his dark clothes soaked through, his sapphire eyes burning with a mixture of raw grief, shame, and terror. For all his billions, for all his power and ruthless intellect, he looked like a broken boy standing in the ashes of his past.
"Clara..." Daniel whispered, the rain catching his words. "I never meant for Marcus to touch you. I swear on my mother’s grave... when I found out Brandon was his creature, I spent every waking second finding a way to destroy Brandon without triggering Marcus's retaliation against you and Leo."
I didn't speak. I stood in the rain, my silk blouse clinging to my skin, my heart pounding against my ribs.
"When I first met you outside that hospital," Daniel continued, his voice cracking, "I came to protect Charles's granddaughter. But then I saw you holding your son with that fierce, unbroken fire in your eyes... and I fell in love with you. Not the heiress. Not the Vance legacy. *You*."
Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a leather-bound folio. He dropped to both knees in the pouring rain, right in front of me, water pooling around his legs.
He held up the folio with trembling hands.
"This is the total surrender of all my maritime assets, all my European trusts, and my biological birthright," Daniel said, looking up at me with tears cutting through the rainwater on his cheeks. "Everything is transferred irrevocably to Leo's name. If you want me to leave, Clara... if you look at me and only see the twin brother of the monster who hurt you... sign these. I will walk away into the ocean right now. You and Leo will never see my face again."
I stared down at the documents, then at the man kneeling in the mud and rain before me.
Brandon had abandoned me in the rain when I was at my weakest, driving away with his mistress while I bled on the curb. Brandon had treated me like garbage to be discarded.
Daniel was kneeling in the same rain, offering me his entire empire, his name, his life—demanding nothing in return, willing to be banished if it meant I felt safe.
A sob caught in my throat, breaking through the ice that had guarded my heart for so long.
I reached down. I didn't take the documents.
Instead, I gripped Daniel’s hands, pulling him up with all the strength in my body.
"Get up," I cried out over the wind. "Get up, Daniel!"
He rose, his towering frame trembling, his eyes wide with shock and disbelief. "Clara...?"
"You are not Julian," I said, reaching up with both hands to cup his cold, wet cheeks, forcing him to look deep into my soul. "You are not Marcus. You are the man who stood by me in court. You are the man who rocked Leo to sleep when he had the flu. You are Daniel."
A ragged gasp tore out of Daniel’s throat. He wrapped his massive arms around my waist, lifting me off my feet and pulling me into a fierce, desperate embrace. He buried his face in the curve of my neck, his entire body shuddering with silent, heavy sobs of relief.

We stood there on the storm-lashed cliff, holding each other as the rain poured down, washing away twenty-five years of lies, fire, and blood.
