Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Dark

The confrontation on the broadcast hung in the air like an electric storm. Evelyn watched Dominic as he stood in silence, the weight of his father’s murder and the betrayal of his own family bearing down upon him. Yet, his posture never broke. He looked like an ancient emperor preparing for his final crusade.
A soft whimper from the corridor broke the tension.
Evelyn turned quickly. Lily stood in the doorway of the war room, clutching a worn teddy bear Arthur had found in the safehouse storage. Her eyes were red, her small body trembling in oversized borrowed pajamas.
"Mommy?" Lily whispered. "I had a bad dream. The loud noises came back."
Evelyn moved to comfort her, but before she could take three steps, Dominic was already kneeling on the floor, lowering himself to Lily’s eye level. The terrifying Don who had just threatened the most powerful mob bosses in the city vanished completely.
"Hey, Lily," Dominic said, his voice softer than Evelyn had ever heard it. "You don't need to be scared. The loud noises can't get in here."
Lily crept forward hesitantly, clutching her bear to her chest. "Are you a good prince or a bad soldier?"
Dominic let out a low, rueful chuckle. "I'm definitely not a prince, little bird. But I’m the soldier standing outside your door so the bad things never get inside."
Lily looked at the bandage visible through his unbuttoned shirt. She reached out a tiny finger, gently touching the edge of the gauze. "Does it hurt?"
"Not anymore," Dominic said. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, intricately carved wooden chess piece—a white knight. He pressed it into Lily’s palm, folding her fingers over it. "Keep this with you tonight. It’s a magic knight. While you have it, nothing can touch you."
Lily’s eyes widened with wonder. A small, sleepy smile broke across her face. "Thank you, Mr. Dominic."
Evelyn walked over, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. She picked up Lily, holding her close, her gaze meeting Dominic’s over the child’s shoulder. The gratitude in Evelyn’s eyes was so intense it made Dominic’s breath hitch.
"I'll put her back to bed," Evelyn whispered.
"Take your time," Dominic replied softly. "I'll be right out here."
Twenty minutes later, after Lily drifted back into a deep, peaceful sleep, Evelyn stepped out into the quiet living quarters of the bunker. Dominic was sitting on the edge of a leather sofa, pouring two glasses of amber whiskey.
He offered one to her as she sat down beside him.
"She likes you," Evelyn said softly, taking a slow sip. The warmth of the liquor spread through her chest. "Lily usually doesn't warm up to strangers. Especially men."
"Children know when someone is lying to them," Dominic answered, staring into his glass. "I wasn't lying to her. I'd burn this entire city to ash before I let Vincent lay a finger on either of you."
Evelyn placed her glass on the low table and turned to him. The distance between them felt paper-thin. "Why, Dominic? You didn't know us four hours ago. You could have taken the pendant, drained the money, and left us in a safe house abroad."
Dominic set his glass down. He turned his body toward hers, his dark eyes searching every contour of her face.
"Because for four years, I thought I was surrounded by ghosts and liars," he said, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I built this empire on vengeance, thinking there was nothing left in this world worth protecting. And then you walked into my restaurant with a broken soul, carrying the entire weight of your world on your shoulders, and you stood in front of death itself without backing down."
His hand came up, his rough fingers tracing the delicate line of her jawline, lingering against the softness of her cheek. Evelyn didn't pull away; her breath hitched as she leaned unconsciously into his touch.
"You're the bravest person I've ever met, Evelyn," Dominic whispered. "And for the first time in my life, I want to fight for something that matters."

Evelyn's heart pounded against her ribs. Before she could speak, Dominic leaned in, his lips hovering mere millimeters from hers.
