Chapter 4 - Fire and Blood

The shattered mahogany doors collapsed inward with a deafening roar, splintering into jagged shards under the force of the breaching charge. Smoke billowed into the penthouse foyer, thick with the sharp stench of cordite. Through the gray haze, three men in tactical gear surged forward, muzzle flashes stropping the dark living room in harsh, strobe-lit violence.

Dominic didn’t flinch. He didn’t take cover. He moved with a cold, terrifying efficiency born of surviving a decade in the underworld’s bloody trenches.

His custom pistol barked twice. The lead breacher dropped instantly, his rifle skattering across the polished Italian marble. Dominic pivoted smoothly, his trench coat snapping around his frame like the wings of a shadow, firing a three-round burst into the second assailant before the man could clear his weapon.

"Marco, left flank!" Dominic bellowed over the concussive echoes.

Marco returned fire from behind an upturned dining table, suppressing the corridor outside. Plaster and drywall exploded as high-caliber rounds shredded the walls.

Behind the marble kitchen island, Evelyn pressed herself against the floor, her body curled completely around Lily. She clamped her hands over her daughter’s ears, whispering desperate prayers into the girl’s curls. Lily shook violently, small sobs muffled against Evelyn’s trembling neck. Evelyn felt the cold weight of David’s pendant digging into her chest—the tiny piece of silver that held the destruction of Vincent’s empire, and the price on all their heads.

A stray bullet ricocheted off the marble counter just inches above Evelyn’s head, showering her hair with stone dust. She gasped, shutting her eyes tight.

Suddenly, a massive, warm weight shielded her from the spray. Dominic dropped to one knee beside her, reloading his weapon with a single fluid motion. His face was streaked with soot, his jaw set in stone, but when his dark gaze locked onto hers, there was no panic. Only pure, unyielding resolve.

"Are you hit?" he demanded, his voice low, steady, and vibrating with dark intensity.

"No," Evelyn breathed, clutching Lily tighter. "We're okay. We're okay."

Dominic reached out, his thumb brushing a smudge of plaster from her cheekbone. The touch was unexpectedly gentle, a stark contrast to the killing machine he had been seconds before. "They brought twelve men. Six are down. Marco and Arthur are holding the rear service elevator. We leave now through the private stairwell."

"Vincent won't stop, Dominic," Evelyn whispered, her green eyes fierce despite her fear. "He knows I'm here."

"Good," Dominic said, a lethal smirk cutting across his sharp features. "Let him come. It saves me the trouble of hunting him down."

He rose slightly and turned to Lily. Dominic knelt low, matching the child's height, his imposing aura softening entirely. "Hey there, little bird. I made a promise to your mom, and I keep my promises. You hold onto her tight, okay? Nobody touches you tonight."

Lily nodded timidly through her tears, sensing the iron fortress this man represented.

Dominic scooped Lily into his left arm with effortless strength, leaving his gun hand free. He reached his right hand down to Evelyn. "On your feet, Evelyn. Time to show them who owns this city."

Evelyn took his hand, feeling the calloused heat of his grip pull her to her feet. Together, flanked by Marco’s covering fire, they sprinted toward the hidden reinforced door at the back of the penthouse, plunging into the dark belly of the building as sirens began to wail in the streets far below.
