Chapter 5 - The Underground Sanctuary

The armored black SUV sped through the rain-slicked labyrinth of Chicago’s industrial district, its headlights cutting through the foggy midnight drizzle. Inside the cabin, the silence was thick, punctuated only by Lily’s soft, exhausted breathing as she slept curled up on the leather back seat, Dominic’s heavy cashmere coat draped over her small body.
Evelyn sat beside her, her hands still shaking with adrenaline. Across from them sat Dominic. In the dim glow of the dashboard lights, Evelyn noticed the dark, wet sheen soaking through the sleeve of his tailored charcoal shirt.
"You're bleeding," she said, her voice catching.
Dominic glanced down at his left shoulder with utter indifference. "A graze. The glass cut me when the frame shattered."
"Let me see it," Evelyn insisted, moving closer before he could protest.
Dominic watched her through hooded eyes as she reached out. For years, people had approached Dominic Moretti only with terror or calculated greed. No one looked at him with genuine, unfiltered concern. Her hands were soft against his skin as she unbuttoned the top three buttons of his shirt and peeled back the fabric. A deep, angry furrow tore across his shoulder muscle, bleeding steadily.
"Arthur has a medical kit in the floorboard," Dominic murmured, his voice dropping an octave as her fingers brushed the warm skin near his collarbone.
Evelyn retrieved the kit, tearing open antiseptic wipes and sterile gauze. Her movements were gentle but assured. "I used to patch up David when he came home from his late shifts. He always hid his bruises from me."
"David was trying to spare you," Dominic said quietly, looking down at her bent head, smelling the faint scent of vanilla and rain clinging to her hair. "He should have trusted you with the truth sooner."
"He was trying to protect our family," Evelyn whispered, dabbing the antiseptic against the wound.
Dominic hissed softly through his teeth at the sting, his muscles tightening like steel beneath her touch. Evelyn instinctively paused, looking up into his obsidian eyes. Their faces were inches apart. She could see the flecks of gold in his irises, the dark shadow of stubble along his razor-sharp jawline, and the raw, protective fire simmering just beneath his composed exterior.
"You don't have to carry the world on your shoulders anymore, Evelyn," Dominic said, his gaze dropping briefly to her lips before locking back onto her eyes. "You handed me the weapon to finish this war. Now let me fight it."
Evelyn taped the bandage firmly in place, her heart hammering not from fear, but from the sudden, intoxicating heat radiating between them. "I'm not a bystander, Dominic. Vincent took my husband. He tried to take my daughter. I want to see him burn."
A slow, appreciative smile curved Dominic’s lips. "Remind me never to make an enemy out of you, Mrs. Carter."
The SUV slowed to a crawl, turning down an unmarked ramp beneath an abandoned textile warehouse. Steel gates slid open automatically, swallowing the vehicle into a subterranean bunker lit by warm amber lights.

"Welcome to The Haven," Marco announced from the driver's seat, killing the engine. "Vincent's hounds won't sniff this place out in a hundred lifetimes."
