Chapter 18 - The Phantom Fleet

Beneath the Moretti estate ran an intricate network of forgotten subterranean tunnels, remnants of the Prohibition era when bootleggers transported liquor beneath the city without ever seeing sunlight.
Dominic led Evelyn, Lily, and the wounded Arthur through the damp, torch-lit stone corridors. Behind them, remote detonators triggered the demolition charges Dominic had planted throughout the main mansion. A deafening roar shook the earth above, collapsing the grand estate into a mountain of burning rubble and crushing the Vanguard strike team beneath thousands of tons of concrete and granite.
"They'll think we died inside the collapse," Arthur muttered through gritted teeth as they emerged into an underground boat dock connected directly to the Chicago riverbed.
A sleek, matte-black military interceptor vessel sat idling in the dark water. Five trusted Moretti loyalists stood at the helm, their weapons at the low ready.
"Get on board," Dominic instructed, helping Evelyn and Lily into the cabin.
Within minutes, the high-speed vessel cut through the icy currents of Lake Michigan, disappearing into the thick midnight fog. Far in the distance, the burning wreckage of the Moretti estate illuminated the night sky like a dying star.
Evelyn sat wrapped in a heavy wool blanket inside the vessel’s command cabin, holding Lily as the child finally fell asleep from sheer exhaustion. Dominic sat opposite her, quietly bandaging a deep laceration on his left forearm.
"You burned your home," Evelyn said softly, gazing at the bruised, powerful man who had sacrificed his ancestral fortress just to keep them breathing. "Everything you built... gone in an hour."
Dominic stopped wrapping the gauze. He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made the chill in the air evaporate.
"A house is just bricks and mortar, Evelyn," Dominic said, his voice deep and steady. "I spent ten years believing that power came from iron walls and fearful men. But tonight, when I heard those gunshots in the bunker... I realized that my real empire is sitting right here in front of me."
Evelyn felt a tremor run through her heart. The gap between the terrifying mafia boss and the broken diner waitress had completely dissolved, replaced by a profound, unbreakable bond forged in fire and blood.

She reached out and gently covered his bandaged hand with hers. "We're going to finish this, Dominic. Together. For David. For Lily. And for you."
Dominic turned his palm upward, interlocking his strong, calloused fingers with hers. "Together."
