Chapter 23 - The Storm at the Gate

The afternoon sun broke through the gray Chicago clouds, casting a golden glow across the private airstrip on the city's southern outskirts. A private Gulfstream jet sat on the tarmac, its engines quietly spooling up to carry Evelyn, Lily, and Dominic to a neutral sanctuary in Switzerland while the political fallout dismantled the remainder of Sterling's network.

Lily was laughing, chasing butterflies on the edge of the asphalt while two trusted Moretti bodyguards watched over her with warm smiles.

Dominic stood near the boarding stairs, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, watching the little girl with an expression of peace he had never known in his violent life.

Evelyn walked up beside him, carrying a light travel bag. She looked at Dominic, her heart swelling with an emotion she was no longer afraid to admit. "Are you really leaving Chicago behind, Dominic? This city was your entire world."

Dominic turned to her, his gaze intense, gentle, and utterly committed. "Chicago was my cage, Evelyn. You and Lily showed me what it means to actually live. I'm not running away. I'm choosing what matters."

He reached out, his hand cupping her cheek. Evelyn leaned into his touch, her eyes fluttering shut for a moment of pure safety, feeling the warmth of his thumb brushing across her cheekbone.

Just as Dominic leaned down to press his lips against hers—a sound shattered the quiet serenity of the afternoon.

It was not thunder.

It was the sharp, muffled *crack* of a high-caliber suppressed rifle echoing from the tree line half a mile away.

*THWACK!*

The bodyguard standing closest to Lily collapsed instantly, a crimson blossom exploding across his chest.

"SNIPER!" Arthur screamed from the jet doorway, drawing his weapon.

"LILY!" Evelyn shrieked in absolute terror, lunging forward across the open tarmac toward her daughter.

Dominic’s instincts flared with blinding speed. He tackled Evelyn to the ground, shielding her entire body beneath his own as two more supersonic rounds ripped through the asphalt inches from their heads, kicking up shards of stone and dust.

From the surrounding treeline, four black tactical gun-trucks with mounted heavy machine guns burst onto the runway at blinding speed, cutting off the jet's taxi route and encircling the tarmac in a choking cloud of tire smoke.

Through the megaphone of the lead vehicle, an unfamiliar, raspy voice hissed with unhinged malice:

*"Senator Sterling may be finished, Don Moretti... but the Syndicate Vanguard was never his to command. Hand over the girl, or nobody leaves this runway alive!"*

Dominic pushed Evelyn beneath the metal wheel well of the jet, his eyes burning with terrifying, feral rage as he drew two automatic weapons from his coat. Lily was screaming from behind a luggage cart just thirty yards away, completely pinned down by laser sights dancing across her small frame.

The ultimate war had just begun.
