Chapter 14 - The Viper’s Cloak

The black screen of the military tablet cast a dull, hollow reflection across the mahogany dining table. For several heartbeats, nobody breathed. The chilling words of Senator Gregory Sterling hung in the air like poison gas, threatening to choke the life out of everything Dominic Moretti had built.

"Twelve hours," Arthur murmured, his hand shaking slightly as he picked up the tablet. "Dominic, this isn't Vincent. This isn't the rival syndicates from New York or Detroit. This is the United States government—or at least the darkest, most untouchable shadow faction within it. If they brand us an international terrorist organization, there won't be a courtroom. There won't be bail. There will only be Hellfire missiles and black-ops death squads."

Evelyn stood frozen, the warmth draining from her cheeks until she was as pale as marble. Her mind didn't jump to the billions of dollars or the empire Dominic commanded. Her mind went straight to the upstairs bedroom where four-year-old Lily was sleeping soundly, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

"They want Lily," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling before hardening into something feral. "They killed my brother David because he stumbled into Vanguard. Now they want to take his niece to bury the secret forever."

Dominic stepped closer to her, towering and immovable. He reached out, his gloved fingers gently lifting her chin until her terrified eyes met his fiery, obsidian gaze.

"Look at me, Evelyn," Dominic commanded in a low, velvet growl that brooked no argument. "Listen to the sound of my voice. As long as blood runs in my veins, no federal agent, no shadow senator, and no mercenary alive will lay a finger on you or Lily. Do you hear me?"

A tear spilled down Evelyn’s cheek, but she nodded, drawing strength from the sheer ferocity of his presence. "What are we going to do, Dominic? We can't fight Washington alone."

"Washington is not a monolith," Dominic replied coldly, turning toward Arthur. "Sterling is a rat wearing an American flag pin. He thinks because he controls a black-budget committee, he holds the heavens in his hands. He made one fatal mistake: he told me what he's afraid of."

"The encryption key," Evelyn realized, her breath catching. "The two point four billion wasn't just cash. It was the financial ledger for Operation Vanguard. David didn't just lock away money—he locked away the names of every politician, judge, and foreign oligarch tied to Sterling’s shadow network."

"Exactly," Dominic said, a lethal smile touching his lips. "Arthur, lock down the perimeter of the estate. Activate Level Four lockdown protocols. Deploy the heavy armor to the outer gates, scramble the jamming arrays over the entire county, and wake up our cyber team. If Senator Sterling wants a war before noon tomorrow, we won't wait for his deadline. We strike first."
