Chapter 6 - The Silver Pendant

The Haven was unlike anything Evelyn had imagined. Built deep into the bedrock beneath the city, the safehouse combined the brutalist security of a military bunker with the refined elegance of Dominic’s personal taste. High ceilings, plush leather furniture, an extensive communications array, and a fully stocked kitchen gave the space a quiet, imposing warmth.
Lily had been tucked into a luxurious guest bed in the rear quarters, finally asleep under the watchful eye of a trusted female medic from Dominic’s inner circle.
In the central war room, Dominic stood before a massive illuminated glass table displaying satellite maps of Chicago and financial network diagrams. Arthur sat with a specialized hardware reader, while Marco stood guard by the vault doors.
Evelyn stepped up to the table, unclasping the chain from around her neck. The silver pendant felt unusually heavy as it rested in her palm. It was shaped like an antique locket, intricately carved with a roaring lion—the crest of the old Moretti alliance.
"David told me never to take it off," Evelyn said, handing it to Dominic. "He said if anything ever happened to him, this was our insurance policy."
Dominic turned the pendant over in his long fingers. With a sharp twist of his thumbnail against a microscopic seam near the lion’s eye, the back plate clicked open. Inside wasn’t a photograph. It was a micro-encryption chip, smaller than a grain of rice, sealed in ceramic casing.
Arthur inhaled sharply. "My God. David really pulled it off."
"Plug it in," Dominic ordered, passing the chip to Arthur.
Arthur slotted the drive into an air-gapped terminal. Strings of encrypted alphanumeric code cascaded across the high-resolution monitors. Arthur’s fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing security layers that would have taken ordinary hackers months to decipher.
"It's a mirror ledger," Arthur breathed, his eyes wide in disbelief. "Every offshore shell company Vincent has used for the last seven years. The Cayman accounts, the Zurich blind trusts, the shell corporations in Panama... Don Dominic, it’s not just operational cash. It's the Syndicate’s entire shadow treasury. Over two point four billion dollars."
Dominic leaned over the monitors, his jaw tight. "And the authorization code?"
"Here," Arthur pointed to a locked cryptographic protocol. "It requires a dual digital signature. One from David’s key, which we have right here... and one master authorization from a Moretti family bloodline."
Arthur looked up at Dominic. "You can wipe him out with a single keystroke. Drain every account, redirect the funds into an untraceable blind foundation, and leave Vincent completely penniless before morning."
"If we drain his accounts," Evelyn realized aloud, "Vincent won't be able to pay his mercenaries. The hitmen, the corrupt captains, the politicians on his payroll..."
"They will turn on him within hours," Dominic finished, his eyes gleaming with lethal satisfaction. "A tyrant without money is just a man waiting to be executed by his own guards."
Suddenly, the red emergency monitor on the wall flashed to life. Marco swore loudly under his breath.

"Boss," Marco said grimly, gesturing toward the screen. "You need to see this. Vincent just went live on the Syndicate's secure broadcast channel."
