Chapter 15 - Lines in the Ash

Within an hour, the grand Moretti estate was transformed into a bristling war fortress. Heavy steel blast shutters descended over every window with deafening thuds. Armed sentries in tactical gear patrolled the grounds with night-vision scopes, while armored SUVs formed defensive perimeters around the estate's private courtyard.
In the sub-level tactical command center, Evelyn sat beside Dominic in front of a bank of illuminated monitors. The silver pendant hung over her collarbone, its hidden micro-transponder plugged into a decrypted military terminal. Lines of code cascaded across the screens like green rain.
"David spent three years building this fail-safe," Evelyn explained, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. Despite her humble life working as a diner waitress, she had absorbed much of her brother's brilliant mathematical logic during their years growing up together. "He knew that if they caught him, they would torture him for the master passkey. So he split the ledger into three synchronized quantum keys."
Dominic leaned over her shoulder, his chest nearly brushing against her back. The clean scent of cedarwood, leather, and gunpowder radiating from him gave her an uncanny sense of grounding amidst the madness.
"Where are the other two keys?" Dominic asked, studying the encrypted sectors.
"One is inside this pendant, which we just unlocked," Evelyn said. "The second was embedded in the offshore accounts you already seized. But the third... the third requires a biometric handshake from a blood relative. Me."
Arthur hurried into the room, holding an encrypted satphone. "Don Dominic, our lookouts at O'Hare and Midway report three unmarked Gulfstream jets landed thirty minutes ago. Manifests are completely redacted. Blackhawk helicopters without tail numbers were spotted refueling at an abandoned naval reserve base twenty miles north."
"They're not waiting for noon," Dominic said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Sterling's twelve-hour ultimatum was a distraction to keep us stagnant while his extraction team moved into position."
Suddenly, the lights flickered. The emergency sirens began to wail in shrill, agonizing pulses.
On the primary security monitor, the infrared cameras at the perimeter gate showed massive heat signatures. Three armored tactical transport vehicles had just rammed through the outer wrought-iron barriers, followed by dozens of ghost-like figures moving in disciplined military formations.
"They're here," Evelyn gasped, grabbing Dominic's forearm.
Dominic didn't flinch. He drew a custom-machined tactical sidearm from his shoulder holster and cocked the slide with a clean, terrifying click. "Arthur, get Lily down to the panic bunker under the armory. Take five men with heavy rifles and do not open that blast door for anyone unless you hear my voice."

"Dominic, wait!" Evelyn cried out, standing up to face him. "You can't go up there alone!"
Dominic turned back to her. For a split second, the cold warlord vanished, replaced by a man looking at the only woman who had ever pierced his icy heart. He caught her face in his hands, pressing his forehead against hers. "I fought my whole life to conquer Chicago, Evelyn. But tonight, I am fighting for my home. Stay with Lily. Let me do what I was born to do."
