Chapter 9 - The Matriarch's Confession

The service chute was narrow, cold, and smelled of grease and ozone. I helped Victoria through first, her silk dress tearing against the sharp steel edges, before lifting Maya into the opening.

“Crawl, baby. Keep crawling straight, don't look back,” I whispered, my heart tearing in two as the sound of Julian’s gunfire grew more frantic behind us. I scrambled in after them, pulling the heavy grate back into place just as a grenade detonated outside, sending a shockwave that vibrated through the metal ducts.

We crawled through the dark labyrinth for what felt like an eternity until we tumbled out into a deserted, dimly lit mechanical room on the 78th floor.

Maya was trembling uncontrollably, her arms wrapped tightly around my neck. Victoria collapsed onto an industrial equipment crate, gasping for air, her pale face streaked with soot and blood.

“Mrs. Sterling,” I said, checking the hallway outside through the cracked door. It was silent, but we had very little time before Alexander’s mercenaries swept the building. “We have to keep moving. We need to reach the street.”

Victoria looked up at me, her eyes clouded with an agonizing mixture of shame and sorrow. “You… you don't know the whole truth, Elena.”

I paused, turning to face the matriarch who had once treated me like dirt under her shoes. “What truth? That Julian’s brother is alive?”

“Not just that,” Victoria whispered, her trembling hands smoothing out Maya’s tangled hair. “Why do you think Alexander targeted Maya’s DNA? Why do you think the Leviathan key responded to *her*?”

A chill crept down my spine. “Because she’s Julian’s daughter.”

“No,” Victoria said, a single tear cutting through the dust on her cheek. “Julian’s blood alone could not unlock it. Leviathan required two biological lineages to activate its administrative protocols. The Sterling bloodline… and the Vance-Vanderbilt line.”

I stared at her, uncomprehending. “What does that have to do with me? I was an orphan! My parents died in an industrial fire when I was four!”

“Your father wasn't an ordinary worker, Elena,” Victoria confessed, her voice cracking under the weight of a decade-old sin. “His name was Ethan Vanderbilt. He was my husband’s original partner. When he threatened to expose the military applications of Leviathan, my husband and Alexander… they orchestrated that fire.”

The room seemed to spin. The air was violently sucked out of my lungs.

“You… you knew who I was?” I stammered, horror washing over me in suffocating waves. “When Julian brought me home years ago… you knew?”

May you like

“I tried to drive you away because looking at your face was looking at the blood on my late husband’s hands,” Victoria sobbed quietly, bowing her head in disgrace. “And now… my eldest monster has returned to finish what his father started.”
