Chapter 7 - Bloodlines and Betrayal

The sound of Arthur Vance’s body striking the steel safe reverberated through the cavernous vault. His gun clattered across the polished concrete floor, spinning until it came to rest against Victoria Sterling’s trembling fingers.
“Mommy!” Maya shrieked, dropping the silver box as I rushed forward, sliding onto my knees and pulling her tiny body into my arms.
I buried my face into her soft curls, smelling the familiar lavender soap mixed with the bitter tang of gunpowder. “I’ve got you, baby. Mommy’s here. You’re safe, you’re safe.”
“Elena…” Victoria rasped from the floor, coughing through the haze. The usually pristine matriarch reached out with trembling, manicured hands, grasping the fabric of my coat. For the first time in my life, there was no disdain in her eyes. There was only raw, desperate gratitude. “She… she wouldn't let him take it. She stood between him and the vault safe…”
Across the room, Julian had Arthur pinned by the throat against the wall, his arm like an iron vise crushing the lawyer’s windpipe.
“Who gave you the clearance codes, Arthur?” Julian snarled, his eyes dark with murderous intent. “The vault sequence was changed forty-eight hours ago. Only three living people had the master sequence: myself, my mother, and…” Julian’s voice suddenly faltered, a terrible realization dawning across his features.
Arthur spat a mouthful of blood onto Julian’s lapel, a wicked, dying smirk spreading across his cracked lips. “You really thought your older brother died in that helicopter crash in Zurich eight years ago, didn't you, Julian?”
The room fell into an eerie, suffocating silence.
Even the blaring alarms seemed to fade into a hollow hum. Victoria let out a choked gasp, clutching her chest as if she had been struck by lightning.
“Alexander?” Victoria whispered, her voice failing her. “My son is… dead.”
“Alexander never died, Mrs. Sterling,” Arthur wheezed, his grin widening despite the agony in his shattered collarbone. “He just realized that waiting for your husband to pass down the empire was a fool’s errand. He faked his death, built the Syndicate from the shadows, and used Charlotte, Bennett, and me to strip Sterling Global down to the bone. And now, he has what he needs.”
Julian’s grip tightened, his knuckles turning porcelain white. “What did he take, Vance?”
Arthur pointed with his eyes toward the open terminal embedded in the vault wall. A blinking green screen displayed a transfer log that had just reached one hundred percent.

“The biometric signature of your heir,” Arthur whispered chillingly. “Maya didn't just hold that music box. The sensor inside read her retina and DNA. Alexander now has full administrative override of the Leviathan network. You didn't stop him, Julian. You just brought his master key straight to the penthouse.”
