Chapter 30 - Blood on the Ivory Key

The ruins of Saint Jude’s chapel stood like a gothic skeleton against the gray morning twilight. Its stained-glass windows were long shattered, and ivy choked the cracked stone arches.

Julian could barely put one foot in front of the other now. The cocktail of adrenaline and morphine was wearing off, leaving his body trembling violently from hypothermia and blood loss. Between Maya and me, we dragged him up the stone steps of the nave and pushed through the rotting oak doors.

"Over there," Julian whispered, nodding toward the altar. "Behind the broken marble pedestal."

I helped Julian sit down against the base of the altar while Maya stood guard near the door, peering through the broken stained glass. I dropped to my knees and cleared away decades of dead leaves and broken roof tiles behind the altar, revealing a heavy iron trapdoor with an old brass dial lock.

"The combination," Julian muttered, his chin resting against his chest, his skin ashen. "Ethan’s favorite psalm... seventy-five... verse two."

"Set your appointed time," I remembered, my fingers working the rusted brass dial. *Seven. Five. Zero. Two.*

With a dull click, the heavy lock released. I pulled the iron ring, hoisting the door open. Below, illuminated by a faint battery-operated maintenance strip, sat a reinforced armored SUV, pristine and dry inside a forgotten cellar, untouched by the world for years.

"It's here," I breathed, turning back to Julian. "Julian, the car is here! We can get to the city, to a hospital, to—"

"Elena..." Julian interrupted softly.

I froze.

Julian was staring toward the chapel's main entrance. Standing in the doorway, silhouetted against the pale morning light, was Victor Sterling. His tailored coat was scorched and torn from the bunker's explosion, and a thin line of blood ran down his temple, but his expression remained chillingly composed.

In his right hand was a heavy-caliber revolver. In his left hand, he held Maya by the collar of her yellow raincoat. He had slipped through the broken side aisle while I was opening the crypt.

"Put the gun down, Mrs. Blackwood," Sterling said smoothly, resting the cold muzzle against the base of Maya's skull. "Or the little sister dies where she stands."

Maya didn't scream this time. She looked at me, her eyes brimming with tears, her lips whispering soundlessly: *I'm sorry.*

"Let her go, Sterling," I said, rising slowly to my feet, my pistol aimed squarely at his chest. "You want Julian. You want the decryption key. You don't need a teenage girl."

"You misunderstand our leverage, my dear," Sterling smiled thinly. "The key inside Julian’s DNA requires an active biological trigger to decrypt the Ouroboros files. A neurological emotional spike. Ethan Vanderbilt was a genius. He knew torture would distort the neural pathways and scramble the key. The only way Julian’s brain produces the precise frequency of neurochemicals to release the cipher... is under the absolute threat of losing the person he loves most."

Sterling shifted his cold gaze from Maya to me.

"Alexander was an idiot who thought Julian loved power," Sterling continued with chilling satisfaction. "He never realized that Julian Blackwood's only vulnerability... was Ethan Vanderbilt's daughter."
