Chapter 6 - Put That Down Right Now

“Arthur,” Julian’s voice sliced through the heavy room like a frozen blade.

Arthur Vance didn't flinch. Slowly, deliberately, he turned his head, keeping the muzzle of his gun locked onto Maya’s trembling frame. His usually immaculate tailored suit was torn at the shoulder, his rimless glasses smeared with soot.

“You’re late, Julian,” Arthur said with a chilling, detached calm. “I expected you five minutes ago. Then again, I suppose dealing with that hysterical little sister of Elena’s delayed your schedule.”

“Let the child go, Arthur,” Julian demanded, raising his weapon with absolute precision, the red laser sight painting a deadly crimson dot directly between Arthur’s eyes. “Whatever they paid you, whatever Bennett promised you, it won't buy your life if you touch a hair on her head.”

“Bennett?” Arthur let out a dry, rattling laugh. “Bennett was an idiot who thought this was about stock manipulation and offshore accounts. He was blinded by greed. But you and I know the truth, don't we, Julian? Leviathan isn't a corporate AI. It’s a global defense architecture. And your father hid the final cryptographic key inside that little music box your daughter is holding.”

Arthur stepped closer to Maya, extending his gloved hand. “Give it to me, little girl. Hand it over, and I won't have to put a hole through your grandmother’s chest.”

“Maya, look at me,” I spoke up, stepping out from behind Julian’s shoulder, my voice trembling with raw, primal authority that surprised even myself.

Maya’s tear-stained face snapped toward me. “Mommy!”

“Put that down right now, Maya.” I commanded, my eyes locking onto hers with unwavering intensity. “Set the box on the floor and step back toward Grandma.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed into slits. “If she drops it, it triggers the secondary tamper-circuit. Hand it to me, Maya!”

“I said put it down, Maya!” I shouted, stepping forward, the pistol in my hands leveling directly at Arthur’s chest. The fear that had paralyzed me for years—the shame of being treated like a second-class citizen, the fear of losing my child to the rich and powerful—evaporated into thin air, replaced by an inferno of motherly rage. “You take one step closer to my daughter, Vance, and I will empty this entire magazine into your throat.”

Arthur hesitated for a fraction of a second, stunned by the sheer ferocity in my eyes.

That fraction of a second was all Julian needed.

Julian fired. The shot grazed Arthur’s shoulder, knocking his arm wide just as Arthur pulled his own trigger. The bullet chipped the concrete inches above Maya’s head.

With a roar of fury, Julian surged forward, slamming Arthur against the reinforced steel vault wall with bone-shattering force.
