Chapter 13 - The Ghost of Blackwood

The heavy silence inside the fortress was more terrifying than the gunfire.

Julian burst into the bedroom, his silhouette framed by the pale morning light spilling through the blinds. “They’ve jammed the power grid from the transformer station. We’re moving to the safe bunker beneath the wine cellar. Now!”

“Julian, look,” I whispered, opening my trembling hand to reveal the blinking tracking device.

Julian stared at the red diode, his jaw clenching with such fury that I thought his teeth would shatter. “They didn't come to steal the key,” he said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. “They came to retrieve the vessel.”

Suddenly, the estate’s private intercom system crackled to life, powered by an external frequency that had overridden the dead communications board.

A voice echoed through every speaker in the house. It was smooth, aristocratic, and bore an uncanny resemblance to Julian’s own tone—yet it was dripping with a chilling, sociopathic malice.

*“Little brother,”* the voice echoed, bouncing off the glass walls and marble floors. *“You always were sentimental. You inherited our father’s weakness for stray women and broken promises.”*

Victoria collapsed to her knees, weeping into her hands. “Alexander…”

*“Step out onto the front courtyard, Julian,”* the voice continued, smooth and mocking. *“Bring Elena and Ethan Vanderbilt’s little granddaughter. Do it now, or my men will detonate the thermite charges planted along the structural foundations. You have exactly sixty seconds to surrender the girl, or nobody walks out of Blackwood Ridge alive.”*

The intercom clicked off with a sharp snap.

Through the window, through the rising mountain mist, a dozen laser sights flickered through the glass, painting crimson dots across the bedroom walls.

Julian looked at Maya, then at me. His eyes were torn between the impossible choice of a commander and the desperate love of a protector. He raised his gun, stepping directly in front of the window, his body shielding ours completely.

“We don't surrender,” Julian whispered, his fingers gripping mine with unbreakable strength. “We fight.”

Downstairs, the heavy iron front doors of the fortress burst open with a deafening, splintering roar.
