Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Dark

The serene mountain morning vanished into a nightmare of flashing amber strobe lights and shrieking sirens.
“Perimeter breach, Sector Four!” a voice barked through Julian’s tactical earpiece. “Motion sensors tripped at the boat house! We have multiple heat signatures approaching the main terrace!”
Julian shoved me behind him instantly, unholstering his weapon. “Get inside! Get to Maya!”
I didn't need to be told twice. I bolted through the French doors and down the wide hardwood corridor, racing toward Maya’s bedroom. The two security guards outside her door were already in tactical formation, their rifles raised down the intersecting hallway.
“Elena, wait!”
Victoria came hurrying down the corridor, leaning heavily on a cane, her face pale with terror. “The surveillance feeds… they’ve been hijacked!”
Inside Maya’s room, my little girl was sitting up in bed, clutching the white teddy bear Julian had bought her for her birthday. “Mommy? What’s that loud noise?”
“It’s okay, sweetie, stay right there,” I said, rushing to her side and wrapping my arms around her. But as I pulled Maya close, my hand brushed against the seam on the back of the teddy bear’s neck.
Something hard and circular was embedded deep within the plush stuffing.
My stomach plummeted. With shaking fingers, I pulled at the stitches. A tiny, silver micro-transponder, no larger than a coin, slid out into my palm. Its tiny red LED light was pulsing in sync with the security sirens outside.
“Oh God…” I breathed, bile rising in my throat. “The bear…”
“It was delivered to the penthouse yesterday,” Victoria gasped, horror contorting her features. “Addressed to Maya from… Charlotte.”
Charlotte hadn't just tried to frame me for corporate espionage on the airfield. She had been used as an unwitting courier. Alexander’s Syndicate had tracked us here through my daughter’s favorite toy. They had known where we were going before we even arrived.
Suddenly, the lights in the estate died.

The backup generators didn't kick in. An eerie, crushing silence settled over Blackwood Ridge, broken only by the distant, rhythmic crunch of boots marching through the pine needles outside.
