Chapter 5 - The Serpent in the Sanctuary

The lobby of the Sterling Tower was in pure chaos. Private security guards were scrambling through the shattered glass of the revolving doors, alarm klaxons blaring a high-pitched wail that scraped against my raw nerves.

Julian didn't wait for the security guards to open the private elevator. Pulling a titanium master key from his pocket, he forced open the emergency maintenance lift, pulling me inside before the doors slid shut. The elevator shot upward at breakneck speed, climbing toward the eighty-fourth floor while my stomach dropped into a bottomless void.

“Take this,” Julian ordered softly, pulling a compact, matte-black handgun from beneath his jacket and pressing it into my hands.

I looked down at the cold metal, my eyes wide. “Julian, I’ve never—”

“You rack the slide back, point, and pull the trigger,” he said, his silver eyes burning with an intense, unyielding conviction. “Anyone who stands between you and Maya is an enemy. Do not hesitate. I will handle the rest.”

The elevator chimed, grinding to an abrupt halt. The doors parted to reveal a hallway choked with acrid gray smoke. The heavy double mahogany doors leading into Victoria Sterling’s private residence hung half-off their hinges, the biometric security panel smashed into sparking wires.

“Maya!” I screamed, abandoning all caution and lunging into the haze.

“Elena, stay behind me!” Julian commanded, stepping forward with his own weapon drawn, his tall frame shielding me as we swept into the vast, open-plan living room.

The priceless art had been ripped from the walls. Shards of antique porcelain lay scattered across the imported marble floor. In the center of the foyer, lying beside a fallen marble pedestal, was Victoria Sterling’s head housekeeper, groaning softly with a head wound.

Julian knelt beside her for a split second, checking her pulse before looking toward the end of the grand corridor. The heavy steel door to the Sterling family archive—a reinforced subterranean vault hidden behind the library wall—stood wide open. A sliver of warm, golden light cut through the drifting smoke.

Then, piercing through the rhythmic whine of the smoke alarms, a small, terrified voice echoed from within the vault:

“Please… don't hurt my grandma!”

My heart stopped. Maya.

Julian and I moved like ghosts across the shattered glass, reaching the edge of the open vault threshold. Inside, illuminated by the emergency floodlights, my nine-year-old daughter was cornered against the steel shelving, clutching a small, tarnished silver music box against her chest.

At her feet lay Victoria Sterling, the formidable matriarch of New York society, bleeding from a cut across her silver-streaked hair, struggling to stand.

Standing over them, holding a silenced automatic pistol aimed directly at my child, was not Marcus Bennett, nor was it any of the corporate spies we had unmasked.

It was Arthur Vance—Julian’s most trusted legal counsel, the man who had drawn up Julian’s will and the legal documents designed to protect Maya’s trust fund.
