Chapter 23 - The Dawn of Ashes

The mansion was groaning, deep structural beams cracking like gunshots beneath our feet. Smoke poured up through the floorboards as the thermite melted the core steel columns of the estate.
“The bridge!” Victoria shouted, coughing through the rising fumes as she helped me lift Julian’s deadweight between our shoulders. “The secondary suspension bridge behind the stables—it’s the only way off the ridge before the cliff shears off!”
Julian stirred, his head lolling against my shoulder. “Elena…” he muttered, barely audible over the roaring fire. “Maya…”
“She’s safe, Julian. Maya is safe,” I whispered into his ear, tasting salt and ash on my lips. “Now stay with me. Don’t you dare close your eyes.”
We dragged Julian through the flaming ruins of the south corridor, bursting out through the garden doors into the freezing mountain rain. Behind us, Blackwood Ridge—the centuries-old fortress of arrogance, secrets, and bloodshed—began to collapse in a spectacular cascade of fire and collapsing masonry. Tons of stone slid down the sheer cliffside into the roaring river below.
We reached the wooden footbridge just as the estate’s main tower gave way with a deafening roar.
Standing on the opposite side of the bridge, shivering under a yellow raincoat next to an idling state police cruiser, was Maya. When she saw us emerging from the smoke, her face lit up, and she began to run forward, waving her arms.
“Julian! Elena!” she cried.
Relief hit me like a physical wave. We had survived. Alexander was dead. The empire of terror was broken. Julian was breathing, his pulse faint but steady beneath my fingers. A future—one filled with sunlight, peace, and the warmth of a real family—seemed just within reach across that narrow wooden bridge.
Then, the state police cruiser’s front door opened.
A tall figure stepped out into the rain. He wasn’t wearing a police uniform. He wore a tailored charcoal suit with a distinctive gold serpent crest pinned to his lapel—the exact insignia of the international syndicate’s high council, the shadow rulers Ethan Vanderbilt had hidden from for twenty years.
The man raised a satellite phone to his ear, his cold, evaluating eyes looking right past Maya, locking directly onto Julian and me.

He spoke calmly into the phone: *“The elder brother has failed. The Blackwood estate is eliminated. But the Vanderbilt heir and the Blackwood commander are both alive and in my sight. Deploy the extraction team. It’s time to collect what belongs to us.”*
The man hung up, drew a silenced weapon from beneath his coat, and smiled faintly at us across the bridge.
