Chapter 56 - The Alpine Fortress

The bunker was buried nearly four hundred meters inside the granite core of Mount Pilatus, accessible only through a camouflaged blast door disguised as a railway maintenance depot.

Built during the Cold War and secretly retrofitted by Elena Vance before her death, the facility was a testament to her brilliance and foresight. As the heavy steel doors sealed behind them with the hiss of hydraulic locks, the interior lights hummed to life.

Rows of automated diagnostic racks, liquid nitrogen storage tanks, and high-performance computational clusters sat preserved under dust sheets.

Veta walked slowly through the cavernous space, touching the edges of the workstations. "Mom worked here?"

"She built this as a sanctuary," David said, his voice laced with awe. "She knew that if the Caduceus Initiative ever discovered she was building an antidote, they would hunt her down. She couldn't finish it in time to save herself, but she left the entire computational framework ready for us."

Karl swept the facility with a military-grade spectrum analyzer. "Clean. No active bugs, no RF leakage. This mountain is a natural Faraday cage. Even orbital satellites can't peek inside."

David immediately connected Elena’s cryogenic drive to the primary mainframe. The massive screens on the central wall illuminated with a high-resolution holographic projection.

A video file sat queued at the top of the directory: *To_David_And_Veta_Final.mp4*.

David hesitated for a fraction of a second, his finger hovering over the interface. Then, he pressed play.

The image resolved to show Elena Vance. She was seated in this very bunker, wearing her white lab coat. Though her skin was pale and dark hollows framed her eyes—evidence of the synthetic pulmonary damage ravaging her body—her gaze was fiery, defiant, and filled with infinite love.

*"Hello, my loves,"* Elena said, a tender smile gracing her lips. *"If you are seeing this, it means David, you never gave up. And Veta... you grew up. You are alive. My brave, beautiful girl."*

Veta pressed her hand to her mouth, tears streaming freely down her face as she sank to her knees before the projection.
