Chapter 43 - The Zurich Safehouse
By nightfall, the high alpine fog had swallowed Mount Pilatus, allowing the unmarked utility van to slip through backroads and into the industrial heart of Zurich-West. The safehouse was an unassuming concrete storage facility disguised as an archival depot for defunct banking records—a place Marcus had kept off the books for over a decade.
Inside, beneath cold fluorescent tubes, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Marcus sat at a metal table, treating a deep graze on his forearm where a ricocheting fragment had caught him at the villa. David paced relentlessly, studying a mosaic of legal documents, encrypted ledgers, and forensic server logs projected onto the bare cinderblock wall.
"Arthur Sterling was never smart enough to orchestrate an international abduction," David said, his voice flat with simmering rage. "He was a small-minded sociopath obsessed with optics and petty control. Who gave him the resources?"
"Look at the money flows," Marcus said, wincing as he tied off a sterile bandage. "We pulled the mirror drive from the Geneva vault before they wiped the primary servers. Arthur’s company, Sterling Health Innovations, received twenty million dollars in blind seed funding twelve years ago—two weeks after Veta was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis."
David froze. The room seemed to lose all oxygen. "Twelve years ago? That was before Arthur married my ex-wife. Before he ever entered our lives."
"It wasn't a coincidence, David," Veta said quietly from the corner of the room. She was sitting wrapped in an insulated blanket, her laptop tethered to an air-gapped terminal. "Arthur didn't target Mom because he loved her. He targeted her because of me. Or rather... because of you."
David walked slowly toward the projection. His fingers traced the jagged lines of corporate shell entities that branched out from Sterling Health Innovations: *Aegis-Nascence AG*, registered in Basel; *Vanguard Genetic Holdings*, registered in the Cayman Islands; and at the apex of the pyramid, an entity known only as *The Ouroboros Trust*.
"Arthur was their scout," David realized, his voice trembling with horror. "He was planted to monitor my progress. When my research stalled, he sabotaged our domestic life, orchestrated the divorce, and tried to strip my parental rights so the trust could gain legal conservatorship over Veta."
"And when you cured her instead of handing over the proprietary biological synthesis," Marcus added grimly, "Arthur panicked. He destroyed the custom ventilator on camera to try and kill her before the trust discovered he had lost control of the asset. The public disgrace forced their hand. They don't want a lawsuit anymore, David. They want the living proof erased, and they want the complete genetic formula."
Suddenly, the encrypted terminal beeped. An incoming satellite connection was forcing its way through their private firewall.

Veta’s fingers hovered over the keyboard. "Someone’s knocking on our secure port. Dad... they're using your old university encryption key."
David nodded slowly. "Open the channel. Let's see who’s hiding behind the serpent."
