Chapter 42 - The Ghost Tunnel of Pilatus

The subterranean air beneath the villa was damp and biting, smelling of ancient wet limestone and cold mountain drainage. Decades before David Vance purchased the property, the estate had belonged to a Swiss civil defense engineer who carved an escape route deep into the granite spine of Mount Pilatus.

"They've bypassed the dock doors," Marcus reported, shining a tactical flashlight down the narrow, vaulted tunnel ahead. The heavy steel door behind them groaned under the assault of thermal breaching lances, the edges glowing a molten, angry orange. "We have four minutes before they burn through the secondary hinges. Move!"

David held Veta’s arm, keeping her between himself and Marcus. Despite her miraculous recovery, every breath she took still sounded like a miracle to David’s ears—a fragile rhythm he had sworn to defend with his life. "Where does this tunnel terminate?"

"An abandoned cogwheel maintenance depot two miles up the mountain track," Marcus said, breathing heavily. "I kept an unmarked utility transport stashed there when we first landed in Switzerland. If we can reach it before their aerial drones sweep the ridge, we can disappear into the high passes toward Liechtenstein."

"They aren't using drones to track our heat signatures," Veta suddenly interjected, stopping dead in her tracks on the gravel floor.

David stopped, turning back in terror. "Veta, what are you doing? We can't stop!"

"Look at this!" Veta turned her tablet toward David. On the screen was an oscillating waveform matching her own heartbeat, intercepted from an open radio frequency. "When they assaulted the Geneva vault, they activated a micro-frequency transponder embedded inside the custom ventilator unit Arthur destroyed back in the States. Dad... the ventilator's backup sub-board wasn't just electronics. Arthur must have had someone slip a military-grade isotope tracker into the base assembly before we ever fled the country."

David felt a cold blade twist in his gut. "The telemetry chip... I salvaged it to rebuild your portable monitoring array."

"It’s in my jacket pocket," Veta whispered, pulling out a small, metallic silver cylinder no larger than a fountain pen. It blinked with a faint, imperceptible pulse of infrared light. "They aren't tracking our cell phones or our vehicle. They’re tracking me."

Behind them, the thermal lance tore through the reinforced cellar door with a deafening hiss of venting pressure. Harsh shouting in German and French echoed down the stone corridor.

"Give it to me," David said instantly, his voice deadly level. "I'll take it down the eastern ventilation shaft. Marcus will take you up the cogwheel line."

"No!" Veta seized his wrist with astonishing strength. "I spent my whole life watching you sacrifice everything while they tried to erase us! You are not playing the decoy, Dad! Not this time!"

She looked around the cavernous tunnel, spotted an active, high-voltage drainage pump humming against the wall, and smashed the transponder against the concrete floor before kicking the shattered components directly into the exposed turbine intake of the industrial pump. The magnetic blades caught the metal, grinding the electronics into ionized dust and scattering its electromagnetic pulse through miles of underground water pipes.

On her screen, the tracking frequency exploded into static.

"Now," Veta breathed, her chest heaving, "they're blind. Let's get out of this mountain."
