Chapter 48 - The Crash at the Pier

David launched the motorcycle off the concrete embankment, crashing down onto the wooden boardwalk less than twenty feet from Helena. The bike slammed onto its side, showering the wet pier in a cascade of blinding sparks and screeching metal, skidding directly into the remaining mercenary’s legs and sending him crashing into the icy, churning black waters of the Danube.

David rolled violently across the wet planks, absorbing the impact, and surged to his feet with an unearthly roar of pure adrenaline.

Helena spun around, her face twisted in panic, and leveled her firearm directly at David’s chest. Her hand was trembling, the pristine ivory fabric of her sleeve soaked in freezing rain.

"Stay back!" she shrieked over the roar of the wind and the river. "I will end you, Vance! I will bury you in this river!"

David didn't stop. He took another step forward, his eyes burning with an icy fury that froze the blood in Helena’s veins. He looked neither at the gun nor at the dark river behind her. His gaze was locked entirely on the monster who had terrorized his child’s life from the shadows.

"Pull the trigger, Helena," David said, his voice dropping into a deadly, rhythmic cadence. "Pull it. Because if you don't kill me with the first shot, I swear to God you won't survive the next five seconds."

Helena’s finger tightened on the trigger—

*Clang!*

A heavy steel fire extinguisher struck Helena’s wrist with brutal accuracy, shattering her aim. The gunshot went wild, ricocheting uselessly off the concrete pier.

Helena screamed, dropping the weapon as she stumbled backward. Standing beside the open side door of the battered van was Veta, holding the empty nozzle of the industrial extinguisher, her breath steaming in the cold night air, her posture completely fearless.

"That’s for my father," Veta said with cold clarity.

David moved like lightning. He closed the remaining distance in a heartbeat, grabbing Helena by the lapels of her soaked coat and pinning her violently against the steel railing of the pier. The gun fell from her limp fingers, tumbling twenty feet down into the dark, churning depths of the river.

Sirens wailed in the distance. Flashing blue and red lights illuminated the bridge above, cascading across the water as dozens of police cruisers, tactical vehicles, and emergency medical units descended upon the riverside docks.

Helena gasped for air, her haughty aristocratic demeanor utterly extinguished. "You... you have ruined everything," she choked out, looking at David with pure hatred. "My consortium... fifty years of dominance..."

May you like

"Your consortium is dead," David said, his face inches from hers, his voice cold as the alpine winter. "And you will spend the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security federal prison, breathing recycled air, remembering that a sick teenage girl and her father took down your entire empire."

He let go of her coat, letting her crumple onto the wet wooden boards just as tactical police officers stormed the dock, pinning her to the ground and clicking heavy steel cuffs around her wrists.
