Chapter 3 - The Livestream Raid

At 11:15 a.m., Bellamy Mercer was live.
She sat in the multi-million-dollar sunroom of Una’s Hawthorne Ridge estate. The natural light poured through double-paned floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating an arrangement of white hydrangeas, a steaming mug of artisanal herbal tea, and Bellamy’s pristine cream-colored cashmere sweater.
The ring light reflected two perfect white halos in her eyes.
Her viewer count was climbing fast: *12,000... 18,000... 25,000.*
*"Thank you all for being here,"* Bellamy said into her wireless lapel microphone, her voice a masterclass in fragile courage. *"I know so many of you saw my story last night. I’ve received thousands of DMs asking if I’m okay, if my mother is okay. The truth is... we are surviving. When you have a family member with severe, chronic medical needs, the emotional toll on the caregivers is something nobody talks about. The outbursts. The resentment. The constant feeling that no matter how much you sacrifice, it’s never enough."*
In the comments, hearts and prayer emojis cascaded up the left side of the screen:
*“You are so brave Bellamy!”*
*“Don't let them tear your family down!”*
*“Caregiver fatigue is real! People don't understand!”*
Off-camera, Una Mercer sat in a wingback chair, wearing her signature pearls, sipping espresso, and nodding with imperial approval. In the adjacent kitchen, Declan Mercer was on his laptop, tapping away at emails to his corporate HR department, assuring them that the "unfortunate domestic incident" was fully under control and that his legal team had already neutralized the situation.
*"What happened yesterday,"* Bellamy continued, leaning intimately toward the lens, *"was a tragic accident. My niece became overwhelmed by the presence of our production equipment. When she experienced a panic attack, she knocked over her own breathing apparatus. I rushed forward to help her. My brother Declan immediately began recording solely to document her medical distress for the paramedics—because as caregivers, documentation is critical."*
She paused, dabbing the corner of her eye with a monogrammed handkerchief.
*"Yet right now, my niece’s mother—who has harbored bitter resentment toward our family ever since her divorce from Declan—is attempting to claim that I intentionally harmed her daughter. She is threatening to release edited audio to destroy my brand partnerships. She is demanding hundreds of thousands of dollars from my mother's estate. It is nothing short of extortion."*
Comments surged:
*“NAME AND SHAME HER!”*
*“Call the police on that psycho mother!”*
*“Cancel the ex-wife!”*
*"We are taking the high road,"* Bellamy said softly, offering a saintly, sorrowful smile. *"We have retained top legal counsel. We will not be bullied. We will not let hate win. I want to thank my incredible partners at Lueur Cosmetics and Aura Health for standing by me during this—"*
*BANG.*
The front door of the Hawthorne Ridge mansion did not open. It exploded inward against the deadbolt with the concussive boom of a tactical hydraulic ram.
Bellamy froze mid-sentence. Her eyes darted off-camera.
*"What was that?"* Una snapped, setting her espresso cup down with a sharp clatter. *"Declan, go see who is at the door!"*
Before Declan could stand, the pristine silence of the estate was shattered by heavy, rhythmic tactical boots and shouting voices that echoed like gunfire off the marble foyer.
*"POLICE DEPARTMENT! SEARCH WARRANT! NOBODY MOVE!"*
Bellamy’s live viewer count jumped instantly: *35,000... 48,000.*
*"What is happening?"* Bellamy whispered, her professional influencer veneer cracking completely.
Three uniformed officers and Detective Ramirez in a plain clothes suit and tactical vest rounded the archway of the sunroom, their hands resting on their sidearms. Behind them came two county crime scene technicians carrying hard-shell forensic cases.
*"Bellamy Mercer?"* Detective Ramirez barked, stepping directly into the center of the room.
Una Mercer rose from her chair like an offended monarch. *"How dare you kick down my door! Do you know who I am? My late husband was—"*
*"Ma'am, sit down and put your hands on the table,"* an officer ordered, stepping into Una’s space with zero deference. *"Do not reach for anything."*
*"Declan!"* Una shrieked. *"Call Arthur Sterling right now!"*
Declan stumbled out of the kitchen, his phone pressed to his ear. *"Officer, there’s been an enormous misunderstanding! I am Senior Director at Vantage Global! My sister was streaming a sponsored—"*
*"Declan Mercer?"* Ramirez asked, barely glancing at him.
*"Yes! Put those weapons away immediately! We have an attorney on—"*
*"Declan Mercer, turn around and place your hands behind your back,"* Ramirez said calmly, unholstering a pair of steel handcuffs.
Declan went utterly white. "What? For what?!"
*"You are under arrest for Tampering with Physical Evidence, Conspiracy to Obstruct Emergency Medical Care, and Felony Child and Dependent Adult Endangerment."*
*"Evidence?!"* Declan stammered, pulling back as two officers seized his wrists. *"I didn't destroy anything! I deleted a private family video from my own phone! That's my private property!"*
*"You deleted an original recording of a violent felony after being instructed by responding officers that an investigation was underway,"* Ramirez said, ratcheting the steel cuffs tight around Declan's wrists with a loud *CLICK-CLACK*. *"And we already have the original unedited file from the cloud server you failed to purge."*
Declan’s knees buckled. His phone slipped from his fingers and clattered onto the hardwood floor. "The... the cloud?"
Meanwhile, the ring light was still on.
The iPhone on the tripod was still broadcasting.
Bellamy was backed against the window, hyperventilating. Her microphone was still live, broadcasting every single word to over seventy thousand people watching in real time across the globe.
Ramirez turned to Bellamy.
*"Bellamy Mercer. Hands behind your back."*
*"No! No, no, no! Stop!"* Bellamy screamed, flailing her arms as an officer moved in. *"I didn't do anything! It was an accident! Declan, tell them it was an accident!"*
*"You hit a nineteen-year-old quadriplegic's life-support unit three times with an iron fireplace poker while she choked on the floor,"* Ramirez said, his voice carrying clearly into the tiny lapel microphone clipped to her sweater. *"You are under arrest for Attempted Involuntary Manslaughter, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Reckless Endangerment Resulting in Critical Injury."*
*"I WAS DEFENDING MY CONTENT!"* Bellamy shrieked, losing every shred of sanity as the officer wrenched her hands behind her back. *"She ruined my take! She ruined my video on purpose! She’s a parasite! Declan, tell them! Tell them she made that noise on purpose!"*
The comments section on the livestream was moving so fast the screen blurred into a solid wall of white text:
*“WHAT THE HELL DID SHE JUST SAY?!”*
*“SHE HIT A VENTILATOR WITH A FIRE POKER?!”*
*“SOMEONE SCREEN RECORD THIS RIGHT NOW!”*
*“SHE CONFESSED ON LIVE OMG SHE CONFESSED!”*
*“DECLAN MERCER VANTAGE GLOBAL! LOOK HIM UP!”*
Una Mercer lunged toward Ramirez. *"Get your hands off my daughter! I will have your badge! I will have this entire department dismantled!"*
Ramirez didn't flinch. He signaled the third officer. *"Una Mercer. You are being served with a grand jury subpoena for accessory to assault and obstruction of justice. If you take one more step toward my officers, you’ll be riding in the back of the wagon next to your son."*
Una stopped dead, her face purple with apoplectic rage, her hand clutching her pearls so hard the string snapped, sending white spheres clattering across the polished floor.
The crime scene technician stepped up to the tripod, looked directly into the camera lens, and calmly flipped the red toggle switch.
