Chapter 33 - The Blueprint of Breath
"We need to verify the molecular structure before anything touches Veta," Kieran said immediately, his legal and operational instincts snapping back into focus. He pulled out his phone, rapidly dialing the chief medical director at the federal research facility. "I don't care if his handwriting matches. We run a full spectrographic analysis."
"You won't have to wait for a lab," Veta said quietly.
She walked over to her workstation, pulling her laptop into her lap. Her fingers flew across the keyboard with dazzling speed. She connected a high-frequency optical scanner to the side of the titanium canister Marcus had brought.
"Veta, be careful," Sloan urged, wiping the tears from her face and stepping to her daughter's side.
"Dad’s encryption keys always followed the Fibonacci sequence paired with the atomic weights of noble gases," Veta muttered, her eyes reflecting the rapid cascade of green code across her monitors. "He taught me that when I was six years old, playing with wooden blocks in the study."
She hit the enter key.
A soft chime sounded from the laptop. A three-dimensional holographic rendering of a peptide chain expanded across the dual screens. Alongside it appeared a live video feed, pre-recorded, displaying a timestamp from less than seventy-two hours ago.
On the screen was David Vance.
He looked older, his hair streaked with silver at the temples, and a deep scar ran down the left side of his jawline—the permanent souvenir of the ambush that had nearly claimed him. But his eyes were unmistakable: bright, warm, and fierce with intelligence.
*"Hello, my brilliant girl,"* David’s voice came through the high-definition speakers, rich and warm, though strained with underlying exhaustion. *"If you're watching this, Arthur Sterling is likely wearing federal handcuffs, and Marcus has delivered the Synthesis Matrix. Veta, the machine you and your mother rebuilt after those cowards broke it... you didn't just repair it. I watched the telemetry from my satellite link. You improved the intake valve design. You solved the pressure-differential paradox that stumped me for fifteen years."*
Veta’s breath hitched, a single tear spilling over her lashes and rolling down her cheek.
*"The compound in this cylinder is not a medicine you have to take for the rest of your life,"* David continued, smiling gently. *"It is a regenerative enzyme. When paired with the custom airflow algorithm of your modified ventilator, it will systematically repair the fibrotic damage in your alveolar walls within seventy-two hours. You will breathe on your own, Veta. You will run. You will swim. You will live the life they tried to steal from you."*
David’s face on the screen turned solemn, his eyes turning toward where Sloan stood.
*"Sloan... my love, my anchor. I know you hate me for staying away. I know the silence was an unbearable cruelty. But the men who paid Sterling weren't just domestic executives. Aegis-Apex was a front for a continental syndicate. And they are realizing right now that their empire is dying. They will make one last move. Do not stay at the loft. Kieran, get them to the federal safe house in Greenbriar immediately. The shadow protocol has been initiated."*
The screen abruptly went black.

At that exact instant, the penthouse’s master circuit breaker tripped. All the lights plunged into total darkness.
