Chapter 9 - The Morning Light

Twenty-four hours had passed since the raid. The world had turned upside down, but inside Dante’s seaside estate in the Hamptons—where we had relocated under heavy, legitimate security—peace had finally arrived.
The sun rose gently over the Atlantic, casting golden beams across the white marble kitchen. The scent of buttery vanilla and sizzling batter filled the air.
Sophia sat on a high barstool, wearing oversized pink pajamas, swinging her little legs happily as she watched me flip a golden pancake onto her plate. "More strawberries, please, Elena!"
"You got it, princess," I laughed, garnishing the stack with fresh berries and a swirl of whipped cream.
Footsteps echoed softly down the hall, and Dante walked in. He had traded his bloodstained bespoke suit for soft linen trousers and a dark cashmere sweater. The dark circles beneath his eyes were still visible, but the cold, haunted edge in his expression had melted away completely.
He walked straight toward the kitchen island, his eyes fixed on me with a tenderness so profound it made my breath hitch.
"Morning, Daddy!" Sophia chirped, her mouth already sticky with maple syrup.
"Good morning, my sweet angel," Dante said, kissing her forehead before turning to me. Without a word of hesitation, he wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me flush against him, burying his face in the crook of my neck. He inhaled deeply, breathing in the scent of vanilla that had tied our destinies together.
"Good morning, Elena," he murmured against my skin, his voice sending shivers of warmth down my spine.
"Good morning, Dante," I whispered, resting my hands on his broad chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart. "Did you sleep at all?"
"A few hours," he said, pulling back just enough to look into my eyes. His gaze was searching, vulnerable, and completely sincere. "I kept waking up to check that Sophia was still in her room... and that you hadn't slipped away while the world was quiet."
"I told you," I said softly, reaching up to gently trace the rugged contour of his cheek. "I’m not going anywhere. You couldn't get rid of me now if you tried."
A breathtaking smile spread across Dante’s lips. "I would never let you leave, Elena. You walked into the line of fire for my daughter. You stood between her and an army. I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by people who wanted things from me—money, power, blood. You only wanted to protect a child you barely knew."

"She needed someone," I murmured.
"She needed a mother," Dante corrected gently. "And I needed you. More than I ever thought I could need another human soul."
