Chapter 7 - The Secret in the Sound

We tumbled into the soundproof, reinforced panic room, and the heavy titanium door slammed shut behind us, cutting off the deafening roar of automatic gunfire. Only Marco, Dante, Elena, and Sophia stood within the brightly lit, sterile bunker.
Dante’s breathing was heavy, but his hands were steady. He immediately checked Sophia from head to toe. "Are you hurt, *tesoro*?"
"No, Daddy," Sophia whispered, her little hands clinging tightly to the lapels of his tailored suit. She was remarkably brave, though her lip quivered. "The loud noises scared me."
"They're gone now. Daddy’s here." Dante pressed a tender kiss to the top of her head. Then, he looked at me. His gaze traced every inch of my body, checking for injuries, before his eyes locked onto mine. "Are you alright, Elena?"
"I'm fine," I breathed, my adrenaline still pulsing. "Just... shaken."
"You did brilliantly," he said, his voice laced with profound warmth.
Marco hurried to the central command console of the bunker. He plugged the micro-SD card retrieved from Sophia’s bear into the terminal. "Decryption running now, Boss. It’s bypassing the federal firewall."
The large monitor flickered to life. A digital waveform appeared, followed by the video feed of a woman sitting in a dimly lit motel room. She had dark hair like Sophia’s and hollow, exhausted eyes, but her expression burned with fierce maternal love.
"Julianna," Dante muttered, his voice barely audible.
The woman on the screen spoke, her voice shaking with fatigue. *"If you are watching this, it means I am already dead, and Sophia is in the hands of someone who found her. Agent Miller was never working to dismantle Salvatore Moretti. Miller took twenty million dollars in cartel bribes to set up the Russo syndicate and hand Dante’s territory to Salvatore. When I realized I was pregnant with Dante’s child, Miller threatened to kill my baby if I didn't frame Dante for federal racketeering."*
Julianna wiped a tear from her cheek. *"I couldn't do it. Dante is a dangerous man, a ruthless man... but he has an honorable soul. He loved me with everything he had, and I knew he would love our child more than life itself. I hid Sophia for five years, keeping her safe from Miller’s death squads. Inside this drive are the offshore bank accounts, the audio logs of Miller ordering Salvatore’s hits, and the signed warrants authorizing illegal assassinations."*
Julianna leaned closer to the camera, her eyes pleading. *"To whoever has my daughter: take this to the Department of Justice’s Internal Affairs division, or give it to Dante Russo. Only Dante has the power to destroy these monsters and keep Sophia safe. Dante... if you are listening... I’m sorry I lied. Forgive me. Protect our little girl."*
The screen went black.
A suffocating silence enveloped the room. Sophia stared at the dark screen, her chin trembling. "Mommy..."

Dante knelt once more. He pulled Sophia into his arms, burying his face in her small neck, his massive shoulders trembling with silent, suppressed grief and absolute vindication. "I forgive you, Julianna," Dante whispered into the quiet room. "And I will protect our daughter with my last breath."
I knelt beside them, tears spilling down my cheeks, and wrapped my arms around both father and daughter. Dante felt my touch and pulled me firmly into the circle of his embrace, binding the three of us together in the midst of war.
