Chapter 3 - In the Shadow of the Wolf

The air in the kitchen turned instantly to liquid nitrogen.

Sophia didn't understand the words, but the sudden, violent shift in the room's energy hit her like a physical blow. Her tiny smile vanished. The cinnamon roll slipped from her fingers, splattering frosting across the pristine white marble. She lunged forward, throwing her arms around my neck, burying her face into my chest with a terrified whimper.

I held her tight, wrapping my arms around her trembling body, staring at the bloody fabric in Marco’s hand with horror.

Dante didn't flinch. The grief and warmth that had softened his features moments ago were completely erased, replaced by the terrifying, cold calculation of an apex predator preparing for war.

"Beatrice," Dante commanded, his voice dropping into a deadly, flat monotone.

The estate manager appeared in the doorway like a ghost, her face drained of color. "Yes, Mr. Russo?"

"Lock down the penthouse. Activate the blast shutters on all exterior windows. No elevator access without biometric confirmation from my personal terminal. If a fly buzzes near the ventilation shafts, shoot it."

"Understood, sir."

"Marco," Dante turned to his lieutenant, his pale gray eyes burning with lethal intent. "Call the captains. I want fifty men on the ground perimeter and snipers on the roof of the water tower. If any vehicle associated with the Morettis comes within three blocks of this estate, do not ask questions. Erase them."

"On it, boss," Marco said, turning on his heel and sprinting back toward the private elevator.

The heavy, mechanical hum of high-grade steel shutters echoed through the cavernous penthouse. One by one, the breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline were swallowed in darkness as reinforced titanium plates slid over the floor-to-ceiling glass, plunging the luxurious home into a shadowed, bunker-like fortress lit only by emergency amber recessed lighting.

Sophia began to cry, the muffled, hysterical sobs vibrating against my collarbone.

"Hey, hey, look at me, baby," I whispered desperately, dropping down to sit on the floor, pulling her into my lap. "Look at Elena. It's just a game of hide-and-seek. The lights are taking a nap, that's all. Nobody is going to hurt you. I promise."

"D-Daddy..." she whimpered, her tiny voice cracking.

Dante walked over. The sheer gravity of his presence seemed to steady the very floorboards beneath us. He knelt down beside us, his massive frame creating a physical wall between his daughter and the rest of the world.

"Sophia," he said, his voice dropping to an impossibly gentle rumble that was meant only for her. "Look at Daddy."

Sophia slowly lifted her tear-stained face from my shoulder.

"You are safe," Dante promised, resting his hand against the side of her neck, his thumb wiping away a tear. "Elena is with you. And Daddy is going to make sure the monsters outside go away forever. Do you trust me?"

Sophia sniffled, her little chin wobbling, but she nodded once.

Dante leaned in, kissing the top of her dark curls, and then his eyes drifted up to meet mine.

The proximity was suffocating. I could feel the intense heat radiating from his chest, could see the dark stubble along his clenched jawline, and the terrifying, beautiful fire raging behind his pale eyes.

"Take her to the safe room behind my master bedroom," Dante commanded softly, his hand lingering on the side of my neck, his thumb lightly grazing my pulse point. My heart was galloping, and he could feel every single beat. "There is a reinforced panic suite behind the walk-in closet. Food, water, medical supplies, and independent air filtration. Lock the vault from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me."

"Dante, what are you going to do?" I asked, my voice trembling with genuine fear—not just for Sophia, but for him.

He offered a grim, devastating smile that made the breath catch in my throat.

"I am going to remind Salvatore Moretti why my family has ruled this city for three generations," he said simply. "And then I am coming back for you both."

Before I could process the weight of his words, Dante leaned forward and pressed his lips against my forehead. The touch was brief, fierce, and searingly intimate—a warrior claiming his home before riding out to slaughter.

"Keep her safe, Elena," he whispered against my skin.

Then he stood up, pulled a custom black semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster, chambered a round with a lethal *clack*, and strode out of the kitchen without looking back.

The safe room was not a dark concrete bunker; it was a lavishly furnished suite concealed behind a revolving wall in Dante’s walk-in closet. It held a king-sized bed, a private bathroom, a wall of monitors displaying live security feeds of the exterior perimeter, and a reinforced steel blast door with a digital keypad.

I punched in the six-digit code Dante had given me and turned the heavy wheel. The door sealed shut with a series of heavy hydraulic thuds, cutting off all sound from the outside world.

Sophia sat in the middle of the large bed, clutching a soft fleece blanket to her chest. She had stopped crying, but her wide brown eyes were glued to the monitors on the wall.

"Come here, Sophia," I said gently, sitting beside her and turning her away from the screens. The last thing a five-year-old needed to see was an impending war outside her window. "Let's read a book. Or do you want me to tell you more about the magical bakery?"

She shook her head. She leaned against me, tucking herself under my arm, her small body exhausted from the adrenaline.

Hours passed in suffocating silence.

On the monitors, I could see shadows moving across the estate grounds. Flashes of light. Muzzle flashes in the far distance near the tree line. Black sedans barricading the main iron gates. The digital clock on the wall clicked past 4:00 PM, then 6:00 PM.

Every minute felt like a razor blade scraping across my nerves. Was Dante alive? Had the Morettis overwhelmed the estate?

Around 8:30 PM, the lights in the safe room flickered violently.

A low, vibrating boom rattled the reinforced walls. An explosion. Somewhere near the main floor of the penthouse.

Sophia gasped, burying her head beneath the blankets.

I scrambled to my feet, my heart slamming into my throat. On the monitor displaying the penthouse living room, smoke was billowing from the shattered glass doors that led to the private elevator. Three men in tactical gear, carrying automatic rifles, stepped into the smoke-filled foyer.

*They bypassed the security elevator.*

My breath caught in my throat. They were inside.

I rushed toward the heavy steel blast door, verifying the heavy titanium deadbolts were locked. The safe room was impenetrable from the outside unless someone had the master bypass code—or enough C-4 to blow the entire floor off the building.

Suddenly, the screen showing the master bedroom went completely black.

Then came the sound.

*Clack. Clack. Clack.*

Heavy footsteps pacing through the bedroom just outside the hidden revolving wall.

I reached for the only weapon I could find—a heavy bronze statuette resting on the safe room’s vanity desk. My hands were shaking so violently that the metal rattled against my rings, but I stood firmly between the sealed door and the bed where Sophia was hiding.

If they broke through that door, they would have to kill me before they laid a single finger on that child.

A sharp, metallic grinding noise echoed from the door frame. The digital keypad on the interior wall flashed from blue to flashing red.

*BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.*

Someone was inputting a code from the outside.

My lungs seized. I raised the heavy bronze statue above my shoulder, tears of pure terror blurring my vision, every muscle in my body coiled to strike.

The hydraulic locks hissed. The heavy wheel spun with agonizing slowness.

*CLANK.*

The steel door swung inward.

A tall, broad figure stepped through the smoke and into the room.

I screamed, stepping forward to swing the heavy bronze statue with all the desperate strength in my body—

A massive, blood-stained hand shot out and caught my wrist in midair with effortless, iron precision.

"Elena. Stop."

The voice was ragged, gasping, and entirely familiar.

I froze.

The bronze statue slipped from my limp fingers, clattering loudly against the carpeted floor.

Dante stood before me.

His charcoal suit was torn to shreds, his crisp white dress shirt stained with dark crimson blood and black soot. A jagged cut across his left temple was bleeding freely down the side of his cheek, and his knuckles were split and swollen. But his pale gray eyes were completely clear. Focused. Alive.

"Dante..." I breathed, my knees completely buckling under the sudden, overwhelming rush of relief.

He caught me before I hit the floor.

He pulled me against his massive, broad chest, his arms wrapping around me with an intensity that knocked the remaining breath from my lungs. He smelled of cordite, rain, copper, and that intoxicating cedarwood cologne. He buried his face into my hair, shuddering violently as he held me.

"You're safe," he rasped, his voice rough and broken against my ear. "It’s over. Salvatore Moretti is dead. His lieutenants are at the bottom of the East River. You're safe, Elena. Both of you."

I couldn't help myself. I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face into his blood-stained shirt, sobbing uncontrollably. The terror, the adrenaline, the fierce, burning relief of seeing him alive overwhelmed every rational thought. He was a dangerous, ruthless monster to the rest of the world, but in this room, he was our savior.

Dante’s grip tightened, his large hand cupping the back of my head, holding me so close I could feel the thunderous, desperate beat of his heart against my ribs.

"I thought they were going to kill you," I sobbed against his neck.

"They couldn't," Dante whispered, his lips grazing the shell of my ear, sending shivers racing across my skin despite the chaos. "I had to come back to this room. I had to come back to you."

A small rustle came from the bed behind us.

Dante slowly pulled back, though his hands lingered on my waist, his touch scorching through my clothes.

Sophia had emerged from beneath the blankets. She stood on the edge of the mattress, looking at her blood-soaked, bruised father.

Dante dropped to his knees, keeping his hands carefully at his sides so he wouldn't get blood on her clothes. "Sophia," he whispered softly, his voice full of shame. "Daddy is sorry. I know I look scary right now—"

Sophia didn't hesitate.

She ran across the carpet and threw herself into Dante’s arms, wrapping her small limbs around his neck with all the strength she possessed. Dante let out a ragged, choking sob, burying his face into his daughter's shoulder, his massive shoulders shaking as he wept openly for the first time in his life.

I stood beside them, wiping tears from my cheeks, my heart bursting with a profound, tender ache that I had never experienced before. They weren't just a powerful man and a traumatized child anymore. They were a family clawing their way back toward the light.

Sophia pulled back slightly. She reached out, placing one tiny hand on Dante’s bruised cheek, and her other hand reached out toward me, tugging lightly at the sleeve of my sweater.

She looked directly into my eyes. Her dark brown gaze was clear, bright, and utterly filled with love.

Then, she parted her lips.

"Mama," Sophia whispered.

The word fell into the room like a struck silver bell.

I gasped, pressing my hands to my mouth as a fresh wave of tears spilled over my lashes.

Dante froze. His breath hitched in his throat. He slowly lifted his head, staring at Sophia in absolute, stunned disbelief, before his pale gray eyes shifted up to me.

The look in Dante’s eyes was no longer just gratitude or desire. It was absolute, unconditional reverence. It was the look of a man who had finally found the missing piece of his soul in the wreckage of his violent world.

"Stay," Sophia murmured, her little voice sweet and fragile as she held onto both of our hands, pulling us toward each other until my fingers brushed against Dante’s bloodied knuckles. "Elena... stay."

Dante’s fingers slowly curled around mine, his grip warm, possessive, and unbreakable.

"She asked you, Elena," Dante whispered, his deep voice thick with emotion, his eyes searching mine with a raw, desperate hunger. "And so am I. Don't go back to that old life. Stay here. Be hers. Be mine."

My heart hammered in my chest. Outside the reinforced walls, the city was burning in the aftermath of a mafia war. More enemies would come. The shadows of Dante Russo’s violent empire would never truly disappear.

Yet, looking down at the little girl holding my hand, and looking into the fierce, devoted eyes of the most dangerous man in New York, I knew I was already lost.

"I'll stay," I whispered.

A slow, devastatingly beautiful smile broke across Dante’s battered face. He leaned forward, lifting our intertwined hands to his lips, kissing my knuckles with a promise that bound our fates together forever.

Just then, the satellite phone in Dante’s torn coat pocket began to vibrate with a high-pitched, emergency chime.

Dante’s smile faded, though he didn't let go of my hand. He pulled the encrypted phone out with his free hand and answered it, putting it on speaker.

"Speak," Dante commanded.

May you like

Marco’s voice crackled through the static, breathless and tight with sudden panic.

*"Boss... we secured Salvatore's compound in Long Island, but you need to see this. Julianna wasn't working alone with the Morettis. She was an undercover operative for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. And Dante... she didn't abandon Sophia. Her handlers are landing at JFK right now with a federal seizure warrant and twenty heavily armed marshals. They're coming to take Sophia into federal protective custody at dawn."*
