Chapter 11 - The Matriarch's Arrival

Marco stood in the doorway, his face pale and unusually tense. Behind him, two female bodyguards in sleek black suits stepped aside to make way for a striking figure walking up the stone path from the driveway.
She was a woman in her late fifties, with raven-black hair swept into an elegant chignon, wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal coat. Her piercing emerald eyes bore an unmistakable resemblance to Dante’s aristocratic heritage. In her hand, she carried an ivory-handled walking cane, walking with the regal grace of a queen who ruled with an iron fist.
Dante stiffened instantly, his hand tightening around mine before he stood up.
"Mother," Dante said, his voice flat, guarded, but laced with reluctant respect.
Contessa Camilla Russo. The true matriarch of the Russo empire. A woman who had survived three separate mafia wars and had personally chosen Julianna as Dante’s bride five years ago before Julianna had vanished.
Camilla entered the sunroom, her sharp eyes taking in every detail of the estate before coming to rest upon me. Her gaze was as cold and sharp as a surgeon's scalpel, sweeping over my simple knitted cardigan and denim jeans.
"So," Camilla spoke, her voice smooth, cultured, and chillingly authoritative. "The rumors from Manhattan are true. Salvatore Moretti is dead, the FBI task force has been dismantled, and my granddaughter has returned from the dead."
Sophia heard the commotion and ran in from the lawn, clutching her stuffed bear. "Daddy?" she called out, stopping short as she noticed the imposing woman.
Camilla’s eyes fell upon Sophia. For a fleeting second, the matriarch’s icy facade cracked, revealing a flicker of intense, grandmotherly longing. But just as quickly, Camilla’s chin rose, and her gaze shifted back to me.
"And who is this girl, Dante?" Camilla asked, pointing her cane subtly toward me. "A stray you picked up from a diner greasy-spoon? I hear you just signed legal guardianship of the Russo bloodline over to a common waitress."

"Watch your tongue, Mother," Dante growled, stepping forward so that his broad shoulders blocked Camilla’s view of me and Sophia. A dangerous, lethal aura radiated from him. "Elena saved Sophia’s life. She stood beside me when your so-called allies were ready to watch us burn. You will show her the respect she has earned, or you will leave my estate this instant."
The tension in the sunroom was suffocating.
