Chapter 10 - A Legal Sanctuary

Later that afternoon, the estate’s sunroom was bathed in warm light. Dante sat at the large glass table, flanked by his chief legal counsel, Arthur Vance—a distinguished, uncorrupted attorney who had handled the Russo family’s legitimate corporate holdings for decades.
I sat beside Dante, holding a folder containing official state documents. Sophia was playing on the lawn just outside the glass doors, tossing a ball for Dante’s gentle Belgian Malinois under Marco’s watchful eye.
"Everything has been certified by the family court in Manhattan," Vance explained, sliding three sets of crisp documents across the table. "With Julianna’s video testament and the DNA confirmation, Dante’s paternity is legally unquestioned. But more importantly, under Dante's explicit instruction, we have finalized the co-guardianship petition."
I stared down at the documents, my heart seizing in disbelief. My name was printed neatly on the legal decree: *Elena Ross — Co-Guardian and Primary Caretaker of Sophia Russo.*
"Dante..." I whispered, looking up at him, my vision blurring with tears. "You did this?"
Dante covered my hand with his own, his grip warm and protective. "Sophia already sees you as her protector, Elena. And if anything ever happened to me, I refuse to let the state or anyone else touch her. Legally, she is your daughter as much as she is mine. You have full custody rights. Full authority over her estate, her education, her future."
"This is... this is giving me immense power, Dante. I was just a waitress thirty-six hours ago."
"You were never 'just' a waitress," Dante said, his voice dropping to a fierce, emotional whisper. "You were the guardian angel who kept my daughter alive when the world was tearing her apart. You gave her safety. You gave me hope. This isn't just paperwork, Elena. This is my promise to you that you will never be unprotected, and you will never be alone again."
Vance smiled discreetly, packing his briefcase and standing up. "I'll file these with the county clerk this afternoon, Mr. Russo. Miss Ross... congratulations."
As the lawyer departed, Dante turned toward me, lifting my hand to his lips and pressing a lingering kiss against my skin. "There is only one more thing missing," he whispered, his gray eyes flashing with raw desire and unspoken devotion.
"What's that?" I asked, my voice barely a breath.

"A ring on your finger," Dante said, his voice husky. "A legal marriage to bind this family together forever."
My heart soared, a feeling of breathtaking joy spreading through my chest. But before I could speak the words burning on my tongue, the French doors burst open.
