Chapter 4 - The Impending Storm

The silence inside the fortified penthouse shattered the moment Marco’s words echoed through the speaker. Federal marshals. A seizure warrant. Dawn.
Dante did not roar in fury, nor did he smash the glass table before him. Instead, a terrifying, absolute stillness descended over the man known across the eastern seaboard as the merciless shadow of the Russo syndicate. The muscles along his square jaw locked into pure granite. His silver-gray eyes, which had softened only moments ago while looking at me and his little daughter, hardened into twin shards of arctic ice.
Yet, despite the catastrophic news vibrating from the satellite phone, his hand never let go of mine. His thumb swept lightly across the back of my knuckles, an instinctive anchor keeping both of us grounded.
"Dante?" I whispered, my heart thumping frantically against my ribs. "What does this mean? If Julianna was FBI..."
"It means," Dante said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register, "that Salvatore Moretti was never the only vulture circling my family. Marco, where are you right now?"
"Ten minutes out from the airfield, Boss," Marco replied over the line, engines roaring in the background. "Miller—the Special Agent in charge of the organized crime task force—filed an emergency ex parte order under the Patriot Act. They’re claiming Sophia is an undocumented minor born during an active undercover operation, classifying her as federal property and a material witness. If they get their hands on her, they’ll bury her in an undisclosed witness protection program before breakfast. You’ll never see her again."
Beside me, little Sophia sensed the sudden tension. Her tiny fingers tightened around mine, her big hazel eyes darting between me and Dante. "Daddy? Is the bad man coming back?"
Dante knelt immediately, bringing his massive frame level with hers. The lethal predator vanished, replaced entirely by a father whose devotion ran deeper than his own survival. "No, *principessa*," he said gently, brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead. "Nobody is taking you from me. Not tonight. Not ever. I promised you, didn't I?"
Sophia nodded hesitantly, pressing her face into my hip. I wrapped my free arm around her narrow shoulders, feeling the delicate rhythm of her breathing. In just a few hours, this fragile child had become the center of my world, and looking into Dante’s fierce, desperate gaze, I knew there was nothing I wouldn't do to keep her safe.
"Pack what she needs, Elena," Dante commanded softly, rising to his full height. "Warm clothes. Her blanket. The bear. We leave in twenty minutes."
"Where can we go?" I asked, my voice trembling despite my best efforts. "If the federal government is coming with warrants, you can’t just shoot your way out of New York. That’s treason."
"They don't want a legal trial, Elena. If Miller wanted an arrest, he would have brought the NYPD and surrounded the block with sirens," Dante replied, striding toward his mahogany desk and opening a concealed wall safe. He retrieved several passports, bundles of untraceable currency, and an encrypted hard drive. "Miller wants Julianna's files. Whatever Julianna stole before Salvatore killed her, Miller wants it buried. Sophia is just leverage to force me into giving up those files. But he doesn't know who he's dealing with."
Dante shoved a sleek, silver handgun into his holster, then turned back to me. His gaze locked onto mine with an intensity that took my breath away. "Trust me, Elena. I dragged myself out of the gutter to build this kingdom. I will burn every bridge to the ground before I let any man tear my daughter from my arms. And you... you stay right by my side."
"I'm not leaving her," I said firmly, meeting his gaze without flinching. "And I'm not leaving you."

A flicker of profound gratitude crossed Dante’s bruised face. Before he could answer, the red emergency beacon above the elevator bank flashed twice. The private elevator was ascending.
"They're early," Dante growled, drawing his weapon in a fluid, terrifyingly practiced motion. "Elena, behind the pillar. Now."
