Chapter 5 - Blood in the Boardroom

By seven o'clock the following morning, the sixty-fourth floor of the Vale Global Tower was a battleground disguised as a corporate sanctuary.

Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Manhattan. Inside the executive boardroom, twelve board members sat around the mahogany table, murmuring among themselves like nervous scavengers. At the head of the table sat Julian Sterling, the vice-chairman of Vale Aeronautics—an impeccably dressed silver-haired patrician who had been with the company since Adrian’s late father founded it.

Beside Julian sat Richard Davenport, Victoria's father, his face pale and blotchy after the public humiliation his daughter had suffered the night before.

"Adrian has lost his mind," Davenport sneered, whispering loudly enough for the room to hear. "First he makes a spectacle of my daughter at the charity gala, and now our overseas shares are plummeting. A paralyzed CEO who cannot attend international defense summits is a liability we cannot afford."

"Richard is correct," Julian Sterling chimed in smoothly, folding his hands over a leather folder. "Our institutional investors are demanding stability. If Adrian cannot run this firm with complete mental and physical fortitude, the board has a fiduciary duty to invoke Article 9 and appoint an interim managing director."

"And who do you propose for that seat, Julian?" a calm, resonant voice cut through the air.

Every head snapped toward the double oak doors.

The room fell into dead, suffocating silence.

Adrian didn't enter in a wheelchair.

He walked into the room on his own two feet, dressed in a custom charcoal three-piece suit, leaning only lightly upon an elegant, obsidian-handled cane. Behind him, dressed in an immaculate ivory tailored pantsuit, I walked with my head held high, carrying a slim carbon-fiber briefcase containing our ammunition.

Davenport’s jaw dropped. Julian Sterling’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure, unadulterated shock.

"Adrian..." Julian stammered, recovering his composure with a forced, plastic smile. "You're... walking. This is an extraordinary surprise."

"Is it?" Adrian replied, stepping with measured, powerful strides toward the head of the table. He didn't take the CEO chair immediately; he simply stood over Julian, his broad shoulders casting a commanding shadow. "You seem disappointed, Julian. Did you anticipate that my recovery would take another six months? Long enough for you to liquidate the Apex-9 defense patents to an offshore shell corporation?"

The temperature in the room dropped below freezing. Several board members gasped.

"That is an outrageous accusation!" Julian sputtered, rising to his feet in mock indignation. "I have served this corporation for thirty years! You dare question my loyalty because of baseless market rumors?"

"Open the briefcase, Elena," Adrian commanded softly.

I clicked the latches open and extracted twelve identical dossiers, sliding them across the polished table.

"At two-seventeen this morning," I announced clearly, projecting my voice with unwavering authority, "a server breach occurred at the Newark telemetry laboratory. The perpetrator utilized an encrypted ghost-key. What the thief didn't realize is that forty-eight hours ago, Adrian and his cyber-defense team embedded a dormant tracking algorithm into our Apex-9 files."

Adrian tapped his cane lightly on the marble floor. "The data packets were routed directly to a private server registered to an entity named *Boreas Holdings* in Zurich. And the beneficial owner of Boreas Holdings..." Adrian paused, fixing his piercing blue eyes onto Julian, "...is your son, Julian."

Julian’s face went chalk-white. He sank slowly back into his leather chair, his hands visibly shaking against the mahogany.

"You collaborated with Davenport to humiliate me publicly, hoping to crush my spirit and force an emergency vote of no-confidence," Adrian continued, his voice cutting like a razor. "You thought Victoria’s little performance would push me into seclusion while you stole the crown jewels of Vale Aeronautics."

"Adrian, listen to me—" Julian began, his voice cracking.

"Security," Adrian said without turning around.

The boardroom doors opened wide. Marcus entered, flanked by four federal agents wearing badges from the Department of Justice’s Economic Espionage Division.

"Mr. Julian Sterling, Mr. Richard Davenport," the lead agent said sternly. "You are under arrest for corporate sabotage, treasonous theft of classified defense technology, and wire fraud."

As the agents cuffed Julian and hauled a sputtering, weeping Davenport out of the room, the remaining board members sat in petrified obedience.

Adrian calmly took his seat at the head of the table. He looked around the room, his presence utterly commanding.

"Now then," Adrian said smoothly, resting his hands on the table. "Shall we discuss the third-quarter earnings?"
