Chapter 4 - The Shadow Behind the Ash

The cold night air on the penthouse terrace suddenly felt suffocating.
I looked at Adrian’s hand. The fingers that had held mine with such warm reassurance moments ago had tightened into a white-knuckled fist around the edges of the glossy photograph. The image was undeniable: the charred, hollowed-out fuselage of his private jet, resting inside the secured government hangar in Ohio. That crash had broken his spine, killed two veteran pilots, and nearly erased Vale Aeronautics from the global market.
"Marcus," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register so dangerously low it sent a shiver down my spine. "Who handled the perimeter sweep of the lobby tonight?"
"Our tier-one detail," Marcus answered promptly, though his jaw was set tight. "The courier was an ordinary dispatch rider. Paid five hundred dollars in cash by a man in an unmarked gray sedan two blocks away. By the time our team checked the intersection, the vehicle was gone. Traffic cameras at that corner were looped."
"Looped?" I breathed, looking between the two men. "That requires high-level municipal clearance or elite military hacking tools."
Adrian slowly turned the photograph over again, reading the jagged red inscription: *Victoria was just the distraction. We haven't finished with you yet.*
A dark, humorless chuckle broke from his chest. "Victoria was too vain, too predictable to conceive something of this scale. She was merely the velvet curtain they drew across the stage while they set up the executioner’s block." He lifted his gaze to mine. "Elena, you need to pack a bag. Marcus will escort you to our safehouse in the Hamptons under full armed guard."
My heart pounded, but I didn't step back. Instead, I stood directly in front of his chair, crossing my arms. "Did you forget what I told you inside the ballroom, Adrian? I told you I wasn't afraid of turbulence. And I told you I don't run."
"This isn't social humiliation, Elena," he said, his tone softening with raw concern. "The people who did this to my plane don't throw champagne flutes or leak tabloid gossip. They kill without hesitation. They targeted me, and now that you stood by my side tonight, they will see you as my vulnerability."
"Then let them try," I countered fiercely. "You just saved my father’s life tonight. You gave him the best medical care in the world when my own relatives abandoned him. If you think I’m going to scurry off to a seaside mansion while snakes circle your home, you don't know me at all. Besides, who organizes your daily schedule, handles your private communications, and decrypts Vale Aeronautics' board briefings? You need me right here."
Adrian stared at me for several heartbeats. The anger in his eyes slowly transformed into something profound—admiration, fiercely burning through the shadows.
"You are relentless," he murmured.
"I’m loyal," I corrected softly. "There's a difference."
Before Adrian could answer, Marcus’s tactical tablet chirped with a sharp, rhythmic ping. Marcus unlocked the screen, his brows furrowing deep. "Boss... we have a catastrophic breach at our Newark research facility. Vale Aeronautics’ prototype telemetry server just experienced an unauthorized root-access override."
Adrian’s eyes snapped toward Marcus. "The orbital guidance code for the Apex-9 project?"
"Someone is downloading the core encryption keys right now," Marcus confirmed grimly. "And the override credentials didn't come from an outside hacker. They're using the biometric digital signature of a senior board member."
Adrian placed his hands on the armrests of his chair. With deliberate, iron-willed strength, he pushed himself upward. His legs trembled slightly from the residual nerve damage, but he forced his spine straight, standing entirely under his own power for the first time in front of Marcus.
Marcus’s eyes widened in stunned silence.

"They think I'm a cripple hiding in an ivory tower," Adrian said, his gaze flashing like tempered steel. "Assemble the crisis team in the war room. It’s time we remind this city who actually owns Vale Aeronautics."
