Chapter 16 - The Mask of Submission

The rain pounded relentlessly against the leaded-glass windows of the manor’s private armory as dawn broke across the Newport horizon.
Adrian stood in the center of the room, stripped of his tailored suit jacket, wearing only a black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. On the target range sixty feet away, three holographic silhouettes flashed into view. Without hesitation, Adrian raised a custom black Sig Sauer, firing three rounds in rapid succession.
*Crack. Crack. Crack.*
Each shot pierced the dead center of the targets' foreheads before the spent brass casings even hit the rubberized floor.
He didn't need a cane. His legs, rebuilt through agonizing years of physical therapy, secret surgeries, and unyielding discipline, were as solid as granite pillars.
"Your left shoulder dipped a millimeter on the third shot," I said, leaning against the doorframe with two cups of black coffee in my hands.
Adrian lowered the weapon, flicked the safety on, and turned toward me, a rare, genuine grin softening the harsh angles of his face.
"Critiquing my marksmanship now, Miss Vance?" he teased, setting the firearm on the bench and walking over to take a cup from my hands.
"When the man shooting is my husband-to-be, I expect perfection," I retorted, though the smile faded from my lips as I looked into his eyes. "Are you sure about this plan, Adrian? Julian is a trained operative. He ran military black-ops logistics before he went rogue. If we play the victims at the gala, the press will tear us apart before Julian even makes his move."
Adrian set the coffee cup down and took both of my hands into his calloused palms.
"The press is a beast that feeds on spectacle, Elena. For the last six months, society has watched you: first as the glamorous socialite who supposedly came to humiliate a disabled billionaire, then as the fierce protector who stood between me and my treacherous cousins. They believe our bond is raw, fragile, and volatile."
He drew me closer, his voice dropping into an intimate whisper. "Julian’s ego is his greatest weakness. For ten years, he has watched from the shadows, convinced that he is the smartest man on earth. If we arrive with me leaning heavily on my cane, trembling, looking overwhelmed by the rumors of his resurrection, Julian won’t be able to resist taking the center stage to announce his triumphant return."
"And while he's basking in the spotlight..."
"Marcus will execute Operation Harpoon," Adrian finished. "The Coast Guard and Navy Intelligence have been tracking Julian's yacht, *The Leviathan*, since midnight. It is currently registered under a Panamanian flag carrying diplomatic cargo to evade inspection. But ten minutes ago, my contacts at Interpol confirmed the cargo: sixty million dollars in gold bullion, untraceable bearer bonds, and the original master server containing Julian’s entire extortion network."
A chill of excitement rippled down my spine. "You're going to seize the yacht while he's at the gala."
"Not me," Adrian smiled darkly. "Federal authorities. Led by warrants issued on charges of treason, maritime terrorism, and the premeditated murder of thirty-four souls on flight Vale-902."
"And what do I do?" I asked, looking into his eyes. "Julian sent that recording to poison our relationship. He thinks I'll buckle under the weight of my father's supposed complicity."
Adrian’s expression turned infinitely tender. He raised my left hand, kissing the massive sapphire engagement ring resting on my finger.
"You wear your finest gown, my queen. You let the world see the sorrow in your eyes—until the trap springs. When Julian attempts to force you to choose between your father’s name and my house, you will deliver the killing blow."
"With pleasure," I whispered, a dark thrill igniting in my veins.

"Now," Adrian said, gesturing toward the armory doors where two of my personal stylists were nervously waiting under Marcus’s watchful eye. "Go prepare for war. The high society of New York is expecting a tragedy tonight. Let us make sure they witness an execution instead."
