Chapter 19 - The Boardroom Ambush

Julian’s hand came up, touching his reddened cheek where my diamond ring had left a thin, crimson scratch. His single gray eye darkened into a pit of bottomless rage.
"You insolent little bitch," Julian hissed, the cultured facade dropping instantly, revealing the feral beast beneath. "You think your theatrical loyalty saves him? Security! Escort this hysterical woman and her invalid fiancé off the premises before I—"
"Before you do what, Julian?"
The voice that cut through the silence did not belong to a broken invalid.
It was deep, resonant, vibrating with the absolute authority of an emperor.
In front of five hundred stunned guests, Adrian Vale let go of his silver-tipped cane.
The cane dropped to the floor, rolling harmlessly across the marble.
Adrian straightened his back. His shoulders broadened, his spine snapped straight, and he rose to his full, towering height of six-foot-three—standing upright on his own two feet with flawless balance, radiating power, vitality, and lethal grace.
Julian’s eye widened in sheer, unadulterated terror. He took an involuntary step back. "Your legs... you were paralyzed!"
"I was recovering," Adrian said smoothly, taking a calm, measured step toward Julian. "And I needed to see which of my enemies were foolish enough to step out into the light."
Before Julian could respond, the massive high-definition projector screen mounted above the orchestra stage flickered to life.
Instead of the charity organization’s logo, the screen displayed a live broadcast from the deck of *The Leviathan*, Julian’s luxury yacht anchored off the Newport coast.
Dozens of federal tactical agents in full tactical gear were swarming the vessel, their weapons drawn. On the lower half of the screen, maritime officers were hauling heavy black crates from the cargo hold, prying them open under the blinding spotlights of Coast Guard cutters to reveal stacks of gold bullion, unmarked military weaponry, and encrypted satellite server towers.
A voice boomed through the ballroom’s sound system—the voice of Special Agent Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation:
*"Vessel The Leviathan has been seized under Federal Warrant 884-Bravo. Master server decrypted. Julian Vance’s offshore accounts have been frozen under international anti-terrorism statutes."*
Julian whipped around, staring at the screen in horror. His breathing turned ragged, his face draining of all color.
"That's not possible," Julian stammered, pulling out his encrypted smartphone. "My market raid... my short positions on Vale stock!"
Adrian casually pulled a sleek silver remote from his tuxedo pocket and clicked it.
The screen split in two. The right side displayed the real-time financial ticker of the London and Tokyo exchanges.
"You attempted to short-sell forty million shares of Vale Holdings," Adrian said, his voice dripping with icy amusement. "You borrowed those shares on margin, using your offshore shell companies as collateral. But while you were standing here delivering your monologue, my financial syndicate executed a total buyout of every single short position."
The ticker flashed bright green, skyrocketing by nearly four hundred percent in seconds.
"You've been squeezed, Julian," Adrian whispered, leaning into Julian's ear as the older man trembled violently. "You owe my clearinghouse two point four billion dollars. And because your yacht and offshore assets were seized ten minutes ago... you are entirely, irrevocably bankrupt."
Panic, naked and ugly, consumed Julian Vance.

"Guards!" Julian screamed, turning toward his four private security operatives. "Get me out of here! Kill them!"
