Chapter 15 - The Serpent’s Ledger

The mechanical hum of the antique phonograph player filled the cavernous ballroom, followed by the hiss of a needle finding its groove. I gripped Adrian’s sleeve so hard my knuckles turned translucent white. Beside us, Marcus kept his hand rested on the grip of his concealed firearm, his eyes scanning the shadowed corners of the room as if the darkness itself might strike.
A voice crackled through the horn—dry, aristocratic, and unmistakable. It was my father, Thomas Vance, recorded nearly a decade ago, but sounding twenty years younger, frantic and pleading.
*"Julian, you can't do this! The Vale family has financed our metallurgical research for three generations! Richard Vale is my closest friend. If you sell the guidance systems to the overseas syndicate, you're committing treason!"*
Then came the second voice—smooth, cultured, laced with a purr of cold psychopathy.
*"Richard Vale is an obstacle, Thomas. He believes in ethics, in restraint, in honor. Look at where that brought us. We are bleeding capital. His son, Adrian, is even worse—a brilliant prodigy who sees through our dummy corporations in Europe. In five years, Adrian Vale will swallow the Vance Defense Group whole and throw you out on the street. I am protecting our legacy."*
*"By blowing up his supply chain? By tampering with his flight mechanics?"* My father’s voice broke on the recording, a ragged sob tearing through the speaker. *"You're a monster, Julian. I will go to the federal authorities tomorrow morning. I will confess everything!"*
A pause. Then the sound of a heavy glass clinking against a crystal decanter.
*"You won't do anything of the sort, dear brother,"* Julian’s recorded voice replied, icy and amused. *"Because your signature is already on the offshore transfer documents. If I fall, you fall. If I am exposed, Elena—sweet little seventeen-year-old Elena—will spend the rest of her youth visiting her disgraced, felonious father in a federal penitentiary. So here is what will happen: tomorrow, my yacht will explode off the coast of Monaco. You will let our company drown in bankruptcy. You will take the blame, take the pity of the world, and fade into obscurity. And when the time is right... I will return to collect Adrian Vale’s empire from the ashes."*
The wax cylinder ended with a sharp scratch, plunging the grand room back into suffocating silence.
Tears streamed freely down my face. All these years, I had believed my father had simply failed as a businessman. I had watched him wither in that nursing home, his mind frayed by stroke and depression, believing he was a broken failure who had dragged me into poverty and forced me into the arms of the high-society vultures.
He hadn't been weak. He had been blackmailed into silence to protect *me*.
"He did it for me," I whispered, my voice breaking. "My father threw his life away, took the disgrace of the entire world, just to keep Julian from destroying me."
Adrian didn't say a word. He stepped in front of me, wrapped his arms around my frame, and buried his face in my hair. His warmth cut through the icy numbness threatening to pull me under.
"Your father is a hero, Elena," Adrian spoke, his voice vibrating deep in his chest. "Julian thought this recording would break you. He thought it would make you doubt yourself, make you feel guilty for what happened to my plane, turn you into a submissive pawn in his hands."
Adrian pulled back, his dark eyes ablaze with an unyielding fire that banished every shadow in the room.
"Julian made one fatal mistake," Adrian continued, his lips curling into a ruthless smile. "He revealed himself too early. He thinks I am still the bitter, broken survivor hiding in this manor. He thinks you are the defenseless socialite he left behind ten years ago."
"Adrian," Marcus intervened, stepping forward with his tablet already displaying financial readouts. "Julian isn't just playing psychological games. Over the last four hours, three major offshore hedge funds registered in the Cayman Islands—all linked to shell corporations under the Vance Defense Group's old maritime licenses—have begun short-selling Vale Holdings stock on the Tokyo and London exchanges. They're preparing to launch a coordinated financial assault at market open tomorrow morning."
"Let them short it," Adrian replied coldly. "Release five hundred million from our Zurich reserves and buy every share they dump. Drain their liquidity while they think they have us cornered."
"And the gala tomorrow night?" I asked, wiping my tears, feeling a sudden surge of adrenaline replace my despair. "Julian invited us to the Centennial Charity Gala. He expects us to show up, terrified and divided."
Adrian looked at me, his fingers tracing the curve of my jaw before resting against my collarbone.
"Then we will give him exactly what he wants to see, my love," Adrian whispered, his eyes glinting with lethal intent. "We will enter that ballroom looking like a wounded billionaire and his terrified fiancée. We will let him take the stage, let him gloat, let him believe he has backed us against the wall."
"And then?" I asked, my heart hammering in my chest.
May you like
"And then," Adrian said, his smile sharpening into the blade of an executioner, "we will publicly rip the serpent’s fangs from his jaw and bury Julian Vance beneath the weight of his own greed."
