Chapter 19 - GWEN'S TOTAL COLLAPSE

One month later.

The Maricopa County Municipal Courthouse was packed with local press and spectators.

Gwen Mercer sat at the defense table, wearing a faded navy-blue blazer provided by a local charitable thrift store. Her hair was cut short and uneven, her hands trembling as she clutched a paper cup of tap water.

Beside her sat a young, overwhelmed public defender who had three other cases on his docket that morning.

Across the aisle sat Sienna Mercer, flanked by Victoria Sterling. Sienna wore a sharp navy pinstripe suit, her diamond stud earrings catching the fluorescent courtroom lights, her posture commanding and serene.

The bailiff called the courtroom to order. "Case number CR-2024-5542, the State of Arizona versus Gwen Mercer. Charges: Domestic Battery, Assault, and Criminal Trespass."

The judge, an imposing woman with thirty years on the bench, adjusted her glasses and looked down at Gwen.

"Mrs. Mercer, we have reviewed the digital recording captured on July tenth. We have reviewed the medical documentation of the victim’s laceration and soft-tissue trauma. Does the defense have a statement before sentencing?"

Gwen’s public defender stood up. "Your Honor, my client is a sixty-two-year-old woman with no prior criminal record. She was experiencing severe emotional distress regarding family financial disputes. We ask for suspended sentencing and community supervision."

The judge looked at the prosecutor. "State?"

"The State requests the maximum statutory penalty of six months in the county correctional facility," the prosecutor said firmly. "The defendant showed zero remorse, repeatedly attempted to flee jurisdiction, and demonstrated a calculated pattern of financial exploitation and physical intimidation."

The judge nodded slowly. She looked down at Gwen Mercer.

"Mrs. Mercer, I have presided over domestic violence cases for three decades. What I saw on that recording was not an emotional misunderstanding. It was the brazen, violent entitlement of an individual who believed her social standing placed her above the law and above basic human decency."

Gwen began to weep, clutching her public defender’s sleeve. "Your Honor, please! I am an old woman! I cannot survive in jail! I have heart conditions! Sally Montgomery and the country club—"

"The country club is not in this courtroom, Mrs. Mercer," the judge cut her off sharply. "And your vanity is not a mitigating factor."

The judge struck her gavel.

"I sentence you to one hundred and eighty days in the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail, followed by two years of supervised probation, five hundred hours of mandatory community service, and a permanent, lifetime protective order barring you from contacting Sienna Mercer or approaching within one thousand feet of her person, residence, or workplace."

*BANG.*

"No! Noooo!" Gwen shrieked as two bailiffs stepped forward, pulling her arms behind her back, clicking the steel cuffs around her wrists. "Sienna! Look at me! Tell them! Christian! Where is my son?!"

Sienna did not look back.

She stood up smoothly, buttoned her blazer, and walked down the center aisle of the courtroom with Victoria Sterling. The press cameras flashed wildly as she exited through the double mahogany doors into the bright, blinding Arizona sunlight.

Reporters thrust microphones into her face.

"Mrs. Mercer! Do you feel justice was served today?"

"Mrs. Mercer! What will happen to the recovered embezzled assets?"

"Are you planning to remain with Meridian Global?"

Sienna stopped at the top of the courthouse steps. She looked out over the city of Phoenix—the city where she had bled, where she had been betrayed, and where she had fought back and won every single inch of her life.

"Justice is not something that is given to you," Sienna said clearly, her voice picked up by every microphone in the press corps. "It is something you take back when people mistake your kindness for weakness."

She put on her dark sunglasses, descended the marble steps, and stepped into her waiting car.
