Chapter 1 - THE SHATTERED MASK

Christian did not look at Sienna’s bleeding lip. He did not ask why his mother was sitting among the shards of an expensive porcelain vase, her silk blouse barely rumpled. His eyes, dark with an anger that had been simmering beneath years of polite smiles, locked directly onto Sienna.

"What did you do to my mother?" Christian roared.

He crossed the distance between them in two violent strides. His hand shot out, wrapping like an iron shackle around Sienna’s left wrist. He wrenched her arm upward, twisting it until pain shot like a live wire from her shoulder down to her fingertips.

"Look at her!" Christian barked, shoving Sienna backward toward the glass table. "She’s an old woman! Have you completely lost your mind? You hit her? In her own home?"

Sienna’s back slammed against the edge of the dining console. The sharp mahogany edge dug into her spine, but she did not cry out. She didn't flinch. For five years, she had bent herself backward to fit into the cramped, suffocating cage of the Mercer family. She had swallowed Christian’s subtle belittling, tolerated his sister Chloe’s relentless demands for designer handbags, and poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into Gwen’s bottomless vanity.

She looked at Christian now—really looked at him.

The man she thought she loved was nothing more than an overgrown boy guarding his queen bee, blind to the poison dripping from her hive.

"Look at me, Christian," Sienna said. Her voice was remarkably steady, though blood pooled on her tongue, metallic and warm. "Look at my face."

"You probably bit your own lip to play the victim!" Gwen wailed from the carpet. The woman was an actress worthy of an Oscar. She pressed a trembling, manicured hand to her chest, hyperventilating on cue. "She attacked me, Christian! I only asked her—very politely—about the household budget, and she went into a demonic rage! She said we were parasites! She said she was going to throw us out into the street!"

"You sick, arrogant brawler," Christian snarled, his face inches from Sienna’s. His spit flecked her cheek. "You think because you make corporate money, you can treat my family like dirt? Apologize to her right now. Get on your knees, beg her forgiveness, and transfer the money. If you don't, so help me God, I will show you what happens to an abusive wife."

Sienna looked down at the hand twisting her wrist. Then she looked up into Christian’s furious eyes.

"Take your hand off me," she whispered.

"Apologize!"

"Three seconds, Christian. One."

Christian laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "Or what? You'll call your little corporate lawyers? You're under my roof, Sienna!"

"Two."

"You don't dictate terms here!"

"Three."

With her free right hand, Sienna did not strike him. Instead, she slid her thumb over the screen of the iPhone she had kept concealed in her palm ever since she walked through the front door.

A high-pitched, crystal-clear chime rang out from the phone’s speakers, followed instantly by Gwen’s screeching voice:

*“You ungrateful woman! In this family, you obey!”*

Then came the sickening, unmistakable crack of the slap. The sound of Gwen’s venomous breathing, the thud of the scuffle, and Gwen’s immediate, calculated pivot: *“She attacked me! Christian is going to find out what kind of woman you are!”*

Christian froze. His fingers loosened around Sienna’s wrist.

The silence that fell over the Phoenix living room was absolute. Even Gwen stopped her hyperventilating. Her mouth hung open, her powdered face draining of color until she looked like a freshly painted corpse.

Sienna pulled her arm back with deliberate calmness. She wiped the streak of blood from her lip with the back of her hand, smearing a red line across her pale skin.

"The audio has already uploaded to my secure private cloud," Sienna said, her voice dropping to a register that made Christian instinctively take half a step back. "It has been mirrored to three off-site servers. And five seconds ago, an automated distress dispatch was sent to Phoenix Metro Police with the GPS coordinates of this house."

Christian blinked, stunned. "You... you recorded my mother?"

"I recorded my assailant," Sienna corrected, her eyes burning like twin stars. "And as for your claim that I am under your roof... Christian, darling. Who holds the deed to this house?"

Christian’s jaw twitched. "That was supposed to be our marital home!"

"Bought through my pre-marital LLC, paid for in cash from my personal bonus," Sienna spat. "Your name isn't on a single document in this building. Not the mortgage, not the property tax receipt, and certainly not the utility accounts."

From down the palm-lined avenue of the gated community, the distant, rising wail of police sirens broke through the desert heat.
