Chapter 11 - THE TRAP SPRINGS
At 8:30 AM the next morning, the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of Meridian Tower was dead silent.
The morning light cut through the floor-to-ceiling glass, illuminating eight senior board members seated around the forty-foot Brazilian walnut table.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendleton. His white hair was neatly combed, his three-piece Savile Row suit immaculate, his expression completely unreadable.
The double doors opened.
Christian Mercer walked in.
He had spent the last of his pocket cash to rent a cheap suit from a discount warehouse and had taken an Uber using an account his aunt set up for him. He had spent twenty minutes in the lobby restroom combing his hair, trying to look like a sorrowful, honorable whistleblower doing his civic duty.
Beside him walked a two-bit local attorney he had scraped together on a deferred-fee promise, a sweaty man named Harold Finch who carried a battered leather briefcase.
"Mr. Pendleton, members of the Board," Christian said, bowing his head with practiced humility. "Thank you for granting me this emergency audience. I know how painful this must be for the company. It is doubly painful for me as Sienna’s husband. But when I discovered the extent of her financial crimes through Apex Horizon Logistics, my conscience would not allow me to stay silent."
Arthur Pendleton did not smile. He did not gesture for Christian to sit down. He simply folded his hands on the table.
"You allege that Sienna Mercer created Apex Horizon Logistics?" Pendleton asked, his gravelly voice echoing in the vast room.
"Yes, sir," Christian said eagerly, stepping forward and placing a folder on the table. "She used Bradley Cooper to process thirty-two fraudulent invoices totaling one point four million dollars. She used the money to buy luxury real estate and off-the-books assets. I have the invoice numbers right here."
"Interesting," Pendleton murmured. He turned his head toward the side door of the boardroom. "Please bring in our Chief Compliance Director."
The side door clicked open.
Christian’s confident smile instantly froze.
Walking through the door was Sienna Mercer.
She was dressed in an exquisite ivory Chanel suit, her posture regal, her stitches barely visible under flawless makeup.
Beside her walked two men: Marcus Vance, the forensic investigator, and Special Agent Thomas Vance from the Phoenix Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Sienna?" Christian stammered, stepping back. "What... what is she doing here? Mr. Pendleton, she’s the target of the investigation! Why hasn't security escorted her out?!"
Arthur Pendleton slowly picked up Christian’s printed email from the table.
"Christian," Pendleton said quietly. "Do you know who founded Meridian Global thirty-five years ago?"
Christian blinked, confused. "You did, sir."
"And do you know who my goddaughter is?" Pendleton continued, his voice dropping into a tone of icy, patronizing disgust. "Whose father loaned me the three million dollars in seed capital that built this entire enterprise?"
Christian’s heart stopped beating. The blood drained from his face until his lips turned blue.
"Sienna’s father," Pendleton said. "Sienna has been like a daughter to me since the day she was born. When she informed me five years ago that she was marrying an unemployed tennis coach’s son with grand ambitions, I warned her. But she loved you. She believed in you."
Pendleton crumpled Christian’s email in his fist and tossed it directly into the brass wastebasket beside his chair.
"Bradley Cooper signed a full sworn confession at 11:00 PM last night," Agent Vance announced, stepping forward and flashing his gold FBI credentials. "He provided four hundred and fifty audio recordings, WhatsApp messages, and wire routing logs proving that you, Christian Mercer, created Apex Horizon Logistics using stolen corporate credentials."
Harold Finch, Christian’s cheap attorney, took one look at the FBI badge, snapped his briefcase shut, and took three steps away from Christian. "I am withdrawing as counsel effective immediately. Good day, gentlemen."
"Harold! Wait!" Christian choked out, his knees trembling.
"Christian Mercer," Agent Vance continued, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his jacket. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and commercial extortion."
"No... no! Mr. Pendleton! Sienna! Please!" Christian screamed, backing toward the glass wall as Agent Vance grabbed his arm and spun him around, forcing his wrists behind his back. "Sienna! I did it for us! I wanted us to have our own capital! I didn't want to live in your shadow anymore!"
Sienna walked toward him slowly, her high heels clicking rhythmically on the hardwood floor.
She stopped six inches from his face.
"You didn't want to live in my shadow, Christian?" she whispered, her voice so cold it seemed to drop the room’s temperature. "Then you're going to love federal prison. The cells don't have any shadows at all."
"Sienna, please! Tell them to drop it! Mom will die! Chloe has nothing!" Christian sobbed, tears and snot running down his face as the steel handcuffs ratcheted tight around his wrists. "Think of our five years together!"

"I am thinking of them," Sienna said. "And I’m charging you for every single second."
