Chapter 16 - ELENA'S BETRAYAL
Scottsdale Fashion Row was an open-air luxury promenade lined with palm trees, outdoor misters, and high-end boutiques like Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton.
At 6:30 PM, the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long, golden shadows across the travertine walkways. A crowd of three hundred wealthy socialites, fashion influencers, and minor celebrities had gathered outside *Elena Vance Couture* for the grand opening.
Champagne flutes were being held by confused guests who were wondering why the heavy glass doors of the boutique were covered in thick white butcher paper, and why two armed Maricopa County Sheriff's Deputies were standing guard outside.
A black Cadillac Escalade pulled up to the curb.
The driver opened the rear door, and Sienna Mercer stepped out.
She looked radiant. Her hair was styled in sleek, cascading waves, her tailored ivory suit accentuating her tall, poised frame. Beside her walked Victoria Sterling and Arthur Pendleton, Chairman of Meridian Global.
The crowd murmured. Cell phone cameras immediately began flashing.
"Is that Sienna Mercer?"
"The one whose husband was arrested by the feds today?"
"What is she doing here?"
Sienna walked through the parted crowd with the regal grace of a monarch inspecting her estates. She approached the front door of the boutique.
The lead deputy stepped aside, tipping his hat. "Good evening, Mrs. Mercer. The writ is active. The keys were surrendered by the building manager."
The deputy unlocked the deadbolt and pushed the glass doors open.
Sienna stepped inside, followed by Victoria and Arthur.
The boutique was lavish. Crystal chandeliers hung from fifteen-foot ceilings, velvet lounge sofas lined the perimeter, and racks of twenty-thousand-dollar Parisian evening gowns were displayed under museum-grade spotlighting.
Cowering behind the marble checkout counter was Elena Vance.
She was wearing her six-thousand-dollar emerald gown, but her face was wild with panic. Her phone was pressed to her ear, screaming into the receiver: "Christian! Answer the phone! They’re inside the store! Christian!"
"Christian can't answer the phone, Elena," Sienna’s voice cut through the perfumed air of the boutique. "He’s currently in an isolation holding cell at the federal detention center in Florence. Inmates aren't allowed cell phones during intake."
Elena dropped the phone onto the marble counter. The glass screen cracked.
She stared at Sienna, trembling from head to toe. "This is my store! I built this! You can't take this from me!"
"You didn't build anything, Elena," Sienna said, walking over to a display of imported leather handbags. She picked one up, inspected the stitching, and set it down. "Apex Horizon Logistics paid sixty-two thousand dollars for the security deposit on this space. Apex Horizon paid four hundred and eighty thousand dollars for this inventory. And Apex Horizon paid for the very dress you are wearing right now."
Victoria Sterling stepped forward, placing a legal document on the marble counter.
"Miss Vance, this is a formal Notice of Immediate Commercial Receivership. Meridian Global has seized all assets, accounts, and inventory of this establishment. You have five minutes to vacate the premises, or the deputies outside will place you under arrest for criminal trespass."
Elena looked around desperately. "I have investors! I have partners!"
"Your 'investor' was Christian Mercer using stolen money," Arthur Pendleton said, stepping forward, his voice carrying the immense weight of his fifty years in corporate finance. "And as Chairman of the company from which that money was stolen, I assure you: every dollar you spent will be recovered through federal asset forfeiture. You are ruined, young lady."

Right at that moment, the front doors burst open.
