Chapter 9 - THE NEW HORIZON

Three months later.
Spring had arrived in Boston. The cherry blossoms along the Charles River Esplanade were in full, glorious bloom, dusting the city in soft shades of pink and white.
Emily stood in her brand-new executive office on the thirty-third floor of Cole Meridian Group.
Following the massive restructuring, the Board of Directors had unanimously appointed Emily Thomas as the new Vice President of Global Financial Strategy. Her office was magnificent, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the Boston Harbor.
Her Brookline condo had been fully renovated and restored—paid for entirely by Cole Meridian’s executive insurance fund—but Emily rarely spent nights there anymore.
A soft knock sounded on her office door.
Alex walked in, wearing an open-collared crisp white shirt and dark blue suit trousers. He looked completely recovered, healthy, vibrant, and happier than anyone in the company had ever seen him.
"Ready for lunch, Vice President Thomas?" Alex smiled, leaning against the doorframe.
"I have a board meeting at two, Mr. Chairman," Emily teased, coming out from behind her massive desk.
"The Chairman hereby cancels all two o'clock meetings," Alex declared, taking her by the waist and pulling her close for a deep, lingering kiss that left Emily breathless.
Over the past three months, their relationship had blossomed into something solid, profound, and undeniable. Alex had introduced her to his life, and Emily had brought him grounded, authentic joy. They spent weekends hiking in New Hampshire, cooking together at the Chestnut Hill estate, and taking long walks through the Arnold Arboretum—where Alex proudly identified every single oak tree they passed.
"Where are we going for lunch?" Emily asked as they stepped into the private executive elevator.
"It’s a surprise," Alex smiled mysteriously.
Instead of heading down to the garage, the elevator traveled up to the building’s private rooftop helipad.
A sleek silver helicopter sat waiting, its rotors spinning smoothly.
"Alex... what is this?" Emily asked, laughing in astonishment.
"Our lunch reservation is in Martha's Vineyard," Alex grinned, taking her hand and leading her toward the aircraft.
An hour later, they were walking along a private, sun-drenched cliffside overlooking the roaring blue Atlantic Ocean on Martha’s Vineyard. The wind was warm, carrying the crisp scent of saltwater.
Near the edge of the cliff sat a simple wooden bench, surrounded by hundreds of vibrant white roses.
"You brought white roses to the beach?" Emily asked, turning to look at him with a warm smile.
Alex stopped walking, holding both of her hands in his. His face turned remarkably earnest, a nervous flutter visible in his slate-blue eyes.
"Emily... four months ago, you were standing in your kitchen on a freezing Thursday night, feeling like time was running out," Alex spoke softly, his voice rich with emotion. "You had a deadline. A plan. A list."
Emily’s breath caught in her throat.
"I spent my whole life surrounded by people who wanted something from me," Alex continued, stepping closer. "My name, my money, my status. But then I met a woman who challenged me, protected me, saw right through my bullshit, and loved me simply for who I was when the masks came off."
He slowly dropped down onto one knee on the lush green grass.
From his jacket pocket, he produced a small, velvet box, opening it to reveal a magnificent, ethically sourced four-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, glistening brilliantly in the ocean sunlight.
"I can't promise you a simple life, Emily," Alex said, looking up into her eyes with profound love. "But I can promise you a partnership. I will sit beside you in emergency rooms at two in the morning. I will argue over movies with you. I will bring you coffee without being asked. And I will love you fiercely for every remaining day of my life."
Tears streamed down Emily’s cheeks—not tears of pressure or fear of a deadline, but tears of pure, overwhelming happiness.
"Alexander Cole-Vance," Emily whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "Will you marry me?"
Alex laughed, his eyes shining. "Is that a yes?"
May you like
"Yes! A thousand times yes!"
Alex stood up, slipping the diamond ring onto her finger before lifting her completely off her feet and spinning her around as the Atlantic waves crashed against the cliffs below.
