Chapter 8 - THE HEALING TOUCH

The private waiting room on the ICU floor of Massachusetts General Hospital was dead silent.
It was 4:00 AM. Outside the high windows, snow was falling gently over Boston.
Emily sat on a leather couch, her hands still stained with dry blood, her eyes red from crying. Rachel sat beside her, holding a warm paper cup of tea.
"Drink a little bit, Em," Rachel urged softly, wrapping a arm around her friend’s shoulders.
Emily shook her head, staring blankly at the floor. "He took a bullet for me, Rachel. He didn't even hesitate."
"Because he loves you," Rachel said quietly.
"I was so focused on my stupid timeline," Emily whispered, tears gathering in her eyes again. "Thirty-five... married... home... I built this rigid box for my life because I was terrified of being hurt or failing. And then this insane, extraordinary man walked into my life and tore down every wall I had."
The door to the surgical suite opened, and a chief surgeon walked out, taking off his mask.
Emily instantly sprang to her feet. "Doctor! How is he?"
The surgeon smiled warmly. "The bullet passed through the lateral oblique muscle without hitting any vital organs or major arteries. He lost a significant amount of blood, but the surgery went smoothly. Mr. Vance is stable and resting comfortably."
Emily let out a long, ragged sob of pure relief, covering her face with her hands.
An hour later, Emily was allowed into his private room.
The room was quiet, filled only with the soft, steady beep of the heart monitor. Alex lay in the hospital bed, a white bandage wrapped tightly around his torso under his hospital gown. His face was pale, but his breathing was steady.
Emily walked softly over to the side of the bed. She pulled a chair close, sat down, and took his large, warm hand in both of hers.
She stayed there for hours, never letting go.
As the morning sun began to filter through the blinds, casting golden light across the room, Alex’s fingers twitched gently in her grip.
He let out a soft groan, his long eyelashes fluttering open.
"Emily?" his voice was raspy, barely a whisper.
Emily stood up, tears glistening in her eyes as she smiled down at him. "Hey there, landscape architect."
Alex squeezed her hand weakly, a slow, breathtaking smile spreading across his face. "Did we... catch him?"
"We caught him," Emily laughed softly, wiping a tear from her eye. "Richard and Markov are both in federal custody. It’s over, Alex. You won."
Alex looked up at her, his slate-blue eyes filled with immense warmth. "I didn't win because of Richard."
"No?"
"I won the moment you agreed to go on a fourth date with me."
Emily’s heart swelled with an emotion so powerful it took her breath away. She leaned down carefully, placing a gentle, tender kiss on his lips.
"Don't you ever scare me like that again, Alexander Cole-Vance," she murmured against his mouth.
"I promise," Alex whispered, looking into her eyes. "Where’s your handwritten list?"
Emily blinked, surprised. "What?"
"The list inside your kitchen cabinet," Alex smiled softly. "The one you were looking at the night we met."
Emily laughed quietly. "How do you know about that?"
May you like
"Marcus did a very thorough background check," Alex confessed sheepishly. "Though he missed the part where you steal my heart."
Emily leaned her forehead against his. "I don't need the list anymore, Alex. I burned it."
