Chapter 2 - THE MASK SLIPS

On Monday morning, the atmosphere inside Cole Meridian Group’s high-rise headquarters was tense. Rumors were circulating that the mysterious owner—a man who had operated through proxy boards for years—was returning to Boston to personally oversee a massive corporate overhaul.
Emily sat in the executive conference room, reviewing quarterly balance sheets with her team. Opposite her sat Richard Vance, the Vice Chairman of the board and uncle to the missing billionaire. Richard was a ruthless man in his late fifties with slicked-back gray hair, expensive tailoring, and a reputation for crushing anyone who questioned his authority.
"These numbers are unacceptable, Emily," Richard declared, slamming a leather-bound folder onto the marble table. "The European acquisition costs have ballooned by forty million dollars. I need your department to sign off on these expenditures by 5:00 PM today."
Emily calmly met Richard’s predatory gaze. She had spent the weekend analyzing the European ledger, and something was deeply wrong. Millions of dollars were being funneled into shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands.
"I can't sign off on this, Mr. Vance," Emily said steadily. "Not until I receive full documentation from the foreign auditors. The paper trail ends abruptly at a holding firm called Apex Capital."
Richard’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "You are a manager, Ms. Thomas. You do not dictate policy to the executive board. Sign the release, or I will ensure your career in financial strategy ends today."
Before Emily could respond, the heavy double doors of the conference room swung open.
Two security guards stepped aside, allowing a tall figure in a bespoke dark navy suit to walk into the room.
Emily’s breath caught in her throat.
It was Alex.
He wasn't wearing his casual olive sweater or his relaxed smile. His dark hair was immaculately styled, his posture commanding and lethal. Surrounding him were three corporate lawyers and two personal security detail officers.
"Is there a problem here, Uncle Richard?" Alex’s voice boomed across the silent room, cool and sharp as a razor.
Richard stood up abruptly, his face losing all color. "Alexander? What... what are you doing here? You were supposed to be in Zurich."
"I was," Alex said, taking off his leather gloves and tossing them onto the conference table. "Until I discovered that someone was attempting to embezzle sixty million dollars through Apex Capital."
Emily sat frozen in her chair, her brain struggling to reconcile the gentle man who had kissed her gloved hand on her front porch with the powerful billionaire now standing at the head of the boardroom.
Alexander Vance. Alexander Cole-Vance.
Alex’s gaze swept across the room until it landed on Emily. For a split second, the cold severity in his slate-blue eyes melted into something tender and apologetic. But he quickly returned his focus to his uncle.
"Ms. Thomas is completely correct," Alex said, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "No signatures will be authorized. In fact, effective immediately, Richard Vance is removed from all operational oversight pending an internal forensic investigation."
"You can't do this!" Richard snarled, his face flushed with rage. "You’ve been playing ghost for two years while I ran this company!"
"You didn't run it, Richard," Alex replied coldly. "You bled it dry. Security, escort my uncle out of the building."
The room erupted into quiet chaos as guards flanked Richard Vance, leading him away as he shouted threats.
The other board members quickly scrambled out of the room, desperate to avoid the Chairman’s wrath. Within minutes, the massive conference room was completely empty—except for Emily and Alex.
Emily stood up slowly, her hands shaking slightly as she gathered her tablet and notebooks.
"Emily," Alex said, taking a step toward her. The corporate titan facade instantly vanished, replaced by the man who had sat across from her at Beacon Hill Bistro. "Let me explain."
Emily held up a hand, her voice icy. "Mr. Vance—or should I say, Mr. Chairman?"
"Emily, please."
"You lied to me," Emily said, her chest tight with a mixture of anger and deep hurt. "You told me you planted trees for a living. You sat across from me, listening to me talk about my mundane corporate job, while you literally owned the building I work in!"
"I couldn't tell you the truth," Alex said urgently, stepping closer until he was standing right across the table from her. "My life has been under constant threat for eighteen months. My father’s car accident wasn't an accident, Emily. It was sabotage. I had to go dark to find out who was trying to destroy my family’s company."
"And using a dating app under a fake identity was part of your top-secret investigation?" Emily scoffed bitterly.
Alex sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. "No. That was a mistake. My head of security made the dating profile months ago to give me a cover as a normal resident in Boston. I was supposed to cancel the date with you. But then..."
He looked directly into her eyes. "Then I saw your picture. And when I met you on Thursday... I forgot about the company. I forgot about the investigation. For two hours, I was just a man enjoying dinner with an extraordinary woman."
Emily swallowed hard. His words felt sincere, but the massive chasm of power, wealth, and deception between them was too vast to ignore.
"I’m an employee of Cole Meridian, Mr. Vance," Emily said formally, stepping back. "And you are my boss’s boss. I value my career too much to get dragged into a billionaire’s corporate war."
She picked up her files and walked straight toward the exit.
May you like
"Emily, wait," Alex called out, his voice tinged with genuine desperation.
She paused at the door, without turning around. "Please keep our relationship strictly professional, Mr. Vance."
